This whole thread really resonates. Especially on a day I was told I might want to postpone going for promotion, while working on the latest set of revisions of a paper and trying to support friends currently in less-than-supportive teams.
Most academics who survive are the ones who had good luck early in their career. Like winning funding or publishing in a 'top journal'. This makes it easier to attract funding later & makes more room for failure.
Those early rolls of the dice will probably decide whether you survive or not.

Such a fantastic study by @tdcapellini.bsky.social's lab, showing how much pelvic bones development changed in humans in adapting to bipedalism. And so frustrating that their grant was terminated by the Trump administration less than half-way through, in retaliation to Harvard not playing along.
