When your doctor mom hasn't seen you for eight years then you break your arm doing something dangerous.
Within the palace infirmary, Elena tutted disapprovingly while hovering her right hand over Katherina's forearm. Katherina could feel a deep, aching itch in her bones as the invisible magics knitted the fractures in her ulna and radius. She attempted to sit still despite the discomfort. Apparently not still enough. She soon felt her mother's left hand tighten its grip on her shoulder. "I imagine you'd like to use this arm at some point in the next few weeks, so stop moving. I don't want to have to break it again if it heals wrong." Katherina nodded and smiled apologetically at her mother, who sighed heavily and resumed her focus. Elena began grumbling slightly under her breath about recklessness and the barbarity of such a ridiculous competition, but Katherina knew it was from a source of concern over her well-being. Her mother had been initially thrilled over her victory before her daughter's injuries drew her attention, and that sentiment would likely return once her job as a healer had been completed.

Clothing is an excuse to share more physical descriptions, my favorite things to write.

Swap shirt for tunic since we're all fancy in fantasy land.
Sunea's jet black hair was held in a tight, low bun, her embroidered vest fit snugly over her perfectly tailored long tunic beneath, loose trousers fit into well cared-for leather boots, and from her black leather belt hung the sheathed sword that was always at her side. Despite being the one maintaining the knight's wardrobe, Katherina wondered how the woman always managed to look as if she had stepped directly out of a hairdresser's after picking up an order from the tailor. Katherina had attempted to emulate the knight's presence over the years, but her thick blonde hair was less manageable, she had never been close to reaching similar levels of severity in her expressions, and while her clothing was of decently high quality it never fit her perfectly. Just about the only piece of her outfit she was comfortable with was her own sword resting in its sheath at her right hip. Whether her provided squire's clothes were too tight over her shoulders or chest, too loose around her waist, or too short for her arms, there was always something that made her feel slightly out of place within them. Katherina had been looking forward to trying to mitigate the problem once she was in a position to control her own wardrobe.

It's Captain Evari's solemn duty to inflate the accomplishments of the people she cares about.
"Your 20th was just a few months ago, yeah?" Evari had turned her head to look over at Katherina, and the squire nodded in confirmation of her age. "You're definitely a long way from the wide-eyed girl who first set foot on my ship seven years back. Why, you're nearly as broad in the shoulder as Ansley now! And when she thinks no one's looking, Maxine's still nursing her wrist from that little arm-wrestling competition you won a week back." The captain leaned in slightly and lowered her voice—forcing Katherina to strain to understand her through her accent—but still spoke with a smirk on her lips. "And don't tell her I said this, but I'd bet that you could even beat Sunea in a fair contest of arms." Katherina felt rather dubious about those claims and knew Evari had to be exaggerating. Ansley the boatswain was as big as a house, she was certain her final match with the ship's third mate Maxine hadn't been so dramatic an incident as to require an extended healing period, and the claim that she was a match for her knight patron's martial skills was wholly ridiculous. Still, Katherina took the captain's meaning in the spirit it was given. She had indeed changed quite a bit since she was twelve. It would not be bragging to acknowledge it.

In the epilogue, a now-queen Lynna is getting ready for bed while tiredly grumbling about being many months pregnant again (with their fifth child) to her now-wife Kath.
Once her wife's hair had been fully brushed smooth, Katherina rubbed the backs of her fingers down the side of her slender neck. She hummed softly, then grinned. "I do seem to recall that my wife's delightfully long legs frequently manage to find themselves wrapped in a death grip around my midsection whilst we are in the throes of passion. That does tend to make it difficult to pull out, even if I were so inclined." Though Lynna scoffed in response to the statement, Katherina chuckled again and leaned in further. The knight moved her wife's long hair to one side and kissed along her ear and down her neck- following the trail of her fingers. Despite Lynna's initial grumbles, the contact quickly caused the queen's lips to drift into a growing smile followed by a soft giggle. Katherina's arms draped over her wife's shoulders. One hand slipped down into the loose neckline of her nightgown. Rough fingers brushed gently along bare skin that was even more sensitive than normal. Lynna's hand moved up to squeeze her knight's forearm. Their lips approached- Two loud, sudden exclamations of audible disgust drew the women's attention. Both their heads turned- towards the twin thirteen year old girls standing in the open doorway. The sisters were half-turned away from their mothers with their hands clamped tightly over their eyes.

When your founding queen is a polyamorous trans lesbian former pirate with five wives, who remains highly fondly regarded over the next 500 years, a certain casual attitude over various societal concerns can become embedded in the country's legal structure.
Elena's fingers kept moving in a slow, purposeful manner while the healer chuckled softly. "That eager for your birthday to be over already?" Lynnari's eyebrows raised in slight surprise. She had been so wrapped up in the flurry of activity around her mother's tricennial that she had again forgotten the shared nature of the event. "Oh, I... I suppose I have been trying not to think about it. I am not looking forward to dealing with whatever suitors mother and uncle have begun to vet for me." The sympathetic chuckle Elena gave in response calmed the nervous energy that had begun to rise within the princess over those thoughts. "As much as Her Majesty wants a grandchild, I know she desires your happiness more. There's nothing stopping you from marrying once for children and again for love. They needn't come from the same source, though that'd be quite a nice find." With a heavy sigh, the princess nodded. Even as the royal heir she would still be well within her rights to take multiple spouses if she desired it. But that did not change the fact that a spouse of some kind was still required. Remaining single was not an option. Not that she necessarily wanted that either, it was just a complicated issue that she was not fully certain about either way.

This requires some history.

Lynna's ancestor was Orryna Melindra, a pirate who became Saelia's first queen 500 years ago. The body of water to their NE was named for her.

And it's right out the window. A family history literally written on the map.

Sunlight filled the princess' bedchambers as the heavy curtains covering the tall windows were pulled open. Despite the sun being only just above the horizon—the waters of Orryna's Sound gleaming beneath it—her bedroom was positioned to receive all of its morning light at this time of year. "Good morning, your highness!" Whether it was the sudden brightness or the loud voice of a maid who was entirely too cheery for how early it was, Princess Lynnari was not happy about being rudely pulled away from the pleasant dream she had been enjoying. A dream that was now quickly fading from her mind. She grumbled into her pillow, digging herself deeper into the warm sheets surrounding her and the softness of the large bed beneath her.

The introduction to how magic works in the setting, and a glimpse at Lynna's rare relationship with it. What she's hearing, seeing, sensing- almost no one else can. Though we don't find out for a while.

Since it's from her perspective she's unaware she's doing anything extraordinary.
"So. Another headache, hun?" Lynnari nodded, and Elena hummed in commiseration. She could sense Elena's fingers hovering a few inches over her right eyebrow. The gentle hum of the sigils tattooed on the back of Elena's hand and halfway up her arm hit her ears. Not the source of Elena's magic, that came from within, but a necessary requirement to break the naturally-wild energy apart into separate forms that could then be joined back together to work towards specifically crafted ends. Water and air combined with mind and essence within the healer's fingertips and began flooding out of them. While the end result was invisible to the naked eye, the flow of magics lit up the position of the healer's hand like a beacon within Lynnari's mind. This feeling was mundane for her. Barely worth thinking about normally, except here she could observe and appreciate Elena's skill in weaving her energy through the sigils and into a form specialized for healing. Perhaps the most complicated area of magics that was possible, nevermind how much specialized anatomical knowledge was also required. Healers like Elena were rare and highly sought after. Not for the first time, Lynnari was glad the older woman was here.

Break the arm of the royal healer's daughter in a tournament and find out.
Ser Sunea was not in immediate danger, so Elena would let her wait while she took care of her daughter. Katherina could not help but feel a warmth in her chest at being on the receiving end of such a protective instinct. She knew that her mother would provide Ser Sunea with proper healing shortly—Elena was not a sadist, and took her job seriously—so for now she pushed down the guilt she was feeling over 'cutting in line' and simply allowed herself to enjoy the attention.

Character appearance and outfit descriptions are some of my favorite things to write.

If you want to dress up like a pirate, you could do worse than Evari's everyday getup.
Captain Evari patted her shoulder again, and Katherina returned her attention to the slightly shorter woman. When they had first met she had estimated the captain to be in her mid-to-late 30s, but even seven years later the woman had seemed to barely age at all. A scattering of dark freckles across Evari's cheeks and nose stood out from her deeply tanned dark brown skin, her perpetually-smiling gray eyes twinkling with mirth. Her intricately braided dark brown hair, faded slightly from the sun and sea spray, fell down her back and over her shoulders where the gold cuffs at the end of each braid moved in the breeze. These ornaments joined the multitude of piercings in each of her ears as they all shimmered in the morning sunlight. The captain's friendly nature and casual attitude made her easy to get along with, but Katherina knew well that when it came down to it she took her role just as seriously as Ser Sunea did. Evari's heavy captain's coat with its fancy epaulets may currently be hanging off the back of a chair in her captain's cabin, but even in a simple partially-laced tunic, plain red sash, and loose trousers tucked into sturdy boots, she bore herself with all the authority it would have exuded.

Chance

Sometimes you have to take the big swing if that's the only chance of victory.

Sometimes you try to think of an interesting onomatopoeia and after a while of no luck and too many prior uses of "clang" you just go with a funny one and hope you can think of something better later.
Additionally, Ser Sunea's chance of victory in this moment was truly not as slim as Katherina would have liked. Katherina's shield arm was broken whereas Sunea was relatively uninjured, and the knight's height and reach could easily result in the woman getting the upper hand. She could regain control of her fallen mace without too much effort. Even without it, her metal gauntlets were designed to be effective weapons on their own. A one-handed competition sword by itself was little use in stopping a knight in full plate armor before she could close to striking range. So as Ser Sunea began to square up, Katherina threw her sword far off to one side. The crowd reacted with confusion and so, it seemed, did Sunea. She had not expected the action to take the knight by surprise, but the fact that it clearly had was a welcome help. Katherina rushed forward while leaning down to scoop up the fallen mace, hefting it one-handed and swinging its full weight directly into her knight patron's side. A muffled cry of pain within Ser Sunea's helmet joined the loud CRUMP the mace head made as it slammed against the knight's cuirass. The blow sent Ser Sunea toppling over, landing heavily onto her side with a loud crash that was almost drowned out by the shocked crowd.

An early-on example of hands very deliberately *not* being used.

The perils of having an extremely tall girlfriend.
"Hello, your highness. I am overjoyed to see you well. It has been far too long." A pleased giggle was all the warning Katherina received. The princess hurried up to her, wrapped her long, slender arms around Katherina's shoulders, and pulled her in for a surprisingly strong hug. "Kath! I can't believe it's you! I wasn't sure what ship you were on until this morning, and didn't know when you'd arrive in the palace or if you would be too busy to see me until later—I thought perhaps Ser Sunea would have you working all through the celebration, that certainly seems like a thing she would do—but how are you? You look amazing! How was-" The princess' voice was soft and melodious, and with even more of a proper Saelian accent than Katherina had remembered. However, the flood of enthusiastic words continuing to hit her ears were having difficulties reaching her brain. The princess' tight hug was proving a significant distraction, since the taller girl had pulled Katherina's face firmly between those monumental breasts. Impossibly soft, warm skin was pressing against her burning cheeks, with a view of smooth, pronounced collarbones and the base of a slender neck entirely filling her vision. Katherina held her hands up, open, and spread widely apart to either side, terrified of inadvertently placing them somewhere inappropriate. An easy mistake to stumble into, given just how much of Lynnari's quite appealing body was within her reach.

Bit of sizing one another up as the duo that won the grand melee square off to fight in the final round of the tournament.

Normally a knight-squire duo would have the squire abstain so their patron could fight the runner-up lord for the glory. Ser Sunea refused to entertain that idea.
But she was still set on her goal. The sword in her left hand and shield in her right felt abnormally light despite her weariness. Her armor was almost a second skin after her years of training, its weight and closeness a comforting presence despite the heat. The pain of her injuries was merely a vague, dull ache at the back of her mind-a presence that existed outside of her intense focus. Katherina had an ingrained awareness of her limitations, and—despite her exhaustion—those limitations had not yet been reached. She prepared a ready stance, shield up and sword blade resting on top- pointed directly forward. Her gaze was intent on the fully plate mail-covered woman in front of her. Ser Sunea stalked back and forth slightly, holding her heavy mace in two hands. The full helmet over the knight's head hid her face from view, but Katherina knew the calculating expression that had to be upon it. Ser Sunea would be judging Katherina's level of weariness after the long melee- the effect the hits Katherina had taken would have on her movement, the potential approaches that the knight could take against her. Seven years of teaching Katherina everything she knew meant the knight had a keen sense of her squire's abilities. Techniques. Weaknesses.

Rewrite goes into more detail how Kath wins the tournament, as well as changing the crowd reaction. The most famous local knight being defeated by a squire no one's heard of would not be a popular outcome at first.

Lynna being the first other person who is happy about it is meaningful.
She turned to face the large, secure, covered area of the stands where the royal family and their various guests and retainers were seated. While walking forward, and with slightly shaky fingers, Katherina unstrapped her shield from her broken right arm and let it fall loudly to the ground. As she removed her helmet, Katherina's blonde hair came into view, many strands clinging to her skin with sweat. She dropped to one knee, setting the helmet on the ground in front of her then holding her fist tightly against her chest. She ignored the shouted announcement of her victory. Ignored the booing, but also ignored the growing cheers that were coming from the sight of a skilled fight regardless of its unpopular outcome. Ignored the attendants gathering the fallen weapons and helping the defeated—and still chuckling—knight off the field. Her eyes were focused on Princess Lynnari, at her position seated next to the queen. The beautiful red-haired woman had leapt to her feet and begun rapidly clapping as soon as the horn had blown. She continued still, despite the queen's barely-masked irritation over her daughter's somewhat undignified behavior.

Decided that a Paladin/Barbarian multiclass in 13th Age 2e might actually be more effective if Phaedre doesn't wear heavy armor. No -2 to attack for barbarian attacks, and a lower AC helps with things that trigger off getting hit or gaining skulls. Plus lower AC = targeted more.

I heard she laughed once. It put her in the hospital for a week.
The knight rose to her feet, giving a sideways glance at Evari. "Thank you for your assistance, Captain." Ser Sunea spoke in a curt tone that, if it were directed at Katherina, would have had her instantly standing at attention and wracking her brain for what she had done wrong. However Evari simply waved her hand absently and chuckled again before vanishing into her cabin and shutting the door behind herself. Katherina stared after Evari with a slight sense of betrayal, but once Ser Sunea moved her focus onto her squire Katherina indeed found herself automatically snapping to attention. A stark contrast to Captain Evari's exuberance in nearly every way, Ser Sunea had her default stern expression on her face as she looked down at Katherina. The knight had been one of the tallest people in the palace when they had left Saelia—second only to the queen—but it was not merely the woman's height and strong build that made her intimidating. More her overall presence. The way every drop of her knightly authority fit her like a glove and radiated off of her in waves. The way it seemed like the act of smiling might cause her physical pain.

We don't get a full physical description of Kath until the princess sees her, and vice versa. It's more fun to see them as they are through each other's eyes than try to shoehorn in a mirror scene or whatnot.

Lynna's trying not to spill tea on herself as she notes how Kath has changed.
Even from the side Lynnari could see her back and shoulders were broad and muscular beneath her doublet. Her arms were similar- thick biceps flexing noticeably beneath the fabric as the woman moved her hands up in an attempt to gently—and unsuccessfully—stop Elena from fussing with the buttons of her collar. The princess' eyes lingered on the noticable swell of her chest, and despite the looseness of the doublet around the woman's waist Lynnari could tell she was sturdy but still rather slender. Her trousers similarly could not hide the fact that they were being filled out by a quite lovely, firm backside. She was... beautiful. There was no other word for it in Lynnari's mind. The princess found herself holding her breath as she stared, and after a moment she breathed in with a slight gasp. The sound drew the attention of the new arrival, whose emerald green eyes widened noticeably as soon as she laid eyes on the princess. Lynnari carefully set the half-full cup and its saucer on the bed, then got to her feet. The woman's eyes followed her upwards, and the princess clasped her hands in front of herself while nervously clearing her throat. "H-hello, Kath."

A big list of proper nouns right off the bat, but nothing we're supposed to retain. Just used to express the feeling she's been to a lot of places except home the last few years.
With the sea spray misting in her hair, Katherina looked off towards the horizon. Far to the southeast—but getting closer all the time—was the ultimate destination of Saelia's Royal Sailing Ship Tenebrous. A week out from Drumbeat Island, where Katherina had spent a month inspecting the defenses with her knight patron. Before then, nearly a year training up the garrisons of The Cobalt Triplets. Fall's Haven island before that. Valshire Isle. Rockfill peninsula. Arnora. Every inhabited island and coastal port city within the Saelian-controlled waters of Orryna's Sound. Nearly seven years of travel. Seven years of combat practice, tactical instruction, logistics management, survival training. Seven years being away from her adopted home. After seven years, Saelia's capital city had finally come into view. Brightly lit by the sunrise at Katherina's back and sheltered by tall cliffs surrounding the bay, the city gleamed like a precious jewel. The city that had given its name to the nation that grew around it. Where Katherina had grown up, where her only family was, and where she had decided to set off on this path to potential knighthood.

I'd want to be Monica permanently, so to avoid the disappointment of having to turn back I'll say Varda instead.

Being an 8' tall indestructible alien bodyguard would be pretty cool for a little while. The "emits deadly radiation" and "might accidentally crush anything with her strength" less so.

Bouncing nobles from the palace needs a bit more nuance than just tossing them out the door like they were a rowdy drunk in a tavern.

Nuance doesn't have to mean subtle, though. Just enough propriety above the subtext to remain plausibly respectful.

Being tossed out might be less scary.
Releasing the young man's shoulder, Katherina stepped forward to open the door for him. He rubbed feeling back into his arm while hurriedly bowing his head repeatedly. "Thank you for the escort, Ser Katherina. For certain I would have not found my own way back here so easily." Katherina nodded. "Of course, Lord Esmir. Do have a safe journey home. Please express my well wishes to your father and mother. I hope Lord Guthyr and Lady Carmin enjoyed the festivities." Before he could respond, Katherina continued. "As well to your sisters Ladies Sylel and Verona, and your brother Lord Hanol. It is a shame they could not attend. Though, one could not expect Lady Verona to travel at this time. You are newly an uncle, yes? My congratulations. I am certain you shall be a responsible one." Her steady gaze stayed locked on his eyes as she spoke, her face neutral. Right hand still casually resting on the pommel of the sword on her right hip. The young nobleman swallowed noticeably, hands wringing nervously, his own eyes darting about to look anywhere else. "Y-yes, I am. Thank you very much. I... shall strive to be. And... I... shall pass your kind words along to them. Thank you again. Have a pleasant evening, Ser Katherina." Then he was hurrying away- speeding up slightly when he looked over his shoulder to see Katherina still watching him from the doorway.
