I made this quilt after Parkland when I read a story about a boy who was deeply traumatized by simply being present and physically uninjured. It’s called “Comfort Quilt for a Lockdown Drill.”
Large quilt made for a child. The alphabet can be faintly seen in the background but some of the letters have been replaced by large block letters of juvenile print fabric (Care Bears, Mickey Mouse, etc) spelling out “A WELL REGULATED MILITIA” and an AR-15 and two handguns have also been appliquéd to the quilt in the same juvenile fabrics. The quilt is tied with jaunty bright red yarn ties.

Just so moved and honored to have a piece of my work - and therefore a small part of me - hanging at the @bplboston Boston Public Library, which has been such an important part of my life since childhood.

This quilt is from my “Kintsugi” series, which I began nearly ten years ago. “Kintsugi X (Scattered): Burgoyne Surrounded Variation” is from 2021 and is in the collection of the International Quilt Museum and Study center at the University of Nebraska. #quilt #quiltsky #modernquilt #textileart
A quilt in the classic Burgoyne Surrounded layout. The quilt is rendered in dark slate grey and black, and mistakes in piecing have been corrected with strips of metallic gold, inspired by the Kintsugi tradition in Japanese aesthetics, where breaks in pottery vessels are mended with gold, emphasizing and beautifying the imperfections. The beauty of the piece emanates from its “flaws.”

We weirdly had them in suburban Boston for the first time in my life and i saw them from the mundane parking lot of an industrial alley during my son’s sports practice and it just made me want to see MORE.
