In a waiting room, remembering something related to the drone panic. Our first night in Princeton was very clear, and the sky was full of stars. Then I noticed they were moving. Then I realized they were planes in a holding pattern for Newark airport

Sometimes the combination of arrogance and ignorance is breathtaking. Yes, US health care has high admin costs; that's because it relies so much on private insurers. Govt-run health insurance has much lower overhead

For a while inflation was coming in surprisingly better than expected. But that is no longer the case. There are two more months of data to go but looks like core PCE inflation this year (Q4/Q4) will be about 2.9%. That would be at least a touch above EVERY median FOMC forecast.

Very much this, from Dan Drezner. He focuses a lot on universities, but rightly so. U.S. educational, scientific and technological preeminence are closely linked — and all have a lot to do with the past openness of our society 1/ open.substack.com/pub/danieldr...

Did anyone else notice that before the election Trump promised one set of tariffs, and just after the election, he's promise-threatening another?

Thinking more about this. So far every Trump pick has been a real piece of work — incompetent, corrupt and/or sexual abuser. This isn't because Trump is a bad judge of character, it's because that's what he wants — incompetence and moral turpitude guarantee loyalty 1/

My @piie.com colleague Olivier Blanchard wrote up this excellent short piece on Trumponomics. Trump is inheriting a strong economy (Trump will be dining on Biden's successes for months/years), but many of his policies will be at odds with sustaining it.

How will Trumponomics work out?
At this writing, a week after the US national elections, it appears that President-elect Donald Trump’s Republican party will gain control of both chambers of Congress, enabling him to enact his economic agenda. He has been clear about his intentions: tariffs to protect the United States, tax cuts to help business, and the expulsion of unauthorized immigrants.
