To be clear, this also goes the other way: there's a subset of too-online liberals who (mainly because of electoral abstention rhetoric) think that being a leftist/progressive somehow *precludes* fighting. The weirdos in Khive who preferred Cuomo to Mamdani on that basis, for instance.

The mainstream media hoped to give him that face-saving, but he thought pure denial was the only available route (because a fundamental view his entire life is *it can only good happen*) as opposed to a kind of War Footing where he co-opts the spirit of national unity that had been emerging.

Heck, it's possible that the very fact that like half of us have despised him *from day one* makes it all the more difficult to move forward, ironically. Fritz the random Nazi could console himself that Hans the respected scholar also fell for it, but it doesn't apply the same way here and now.

I truly don't know the best way to handle that, because on the one hand it's seemingly necessary for going forward, and on the other hand it leaves the actual evil unaddressed
A German-level national shame seems too much to ask for, I guess

When he stole that seat at that charity auction, that was an offense committed against some other rich person! Didn't matter somehow! (And he wasn't even a "political figure" then! Merely the power of shamelessness, I suppose)

Makes me think of Chris Rock's insight that while the Civil Rights Movement is typically framed as an African-American triumph (and absolutely was one) it's not like prior generations of Black people lacked ability to pull it off before, they just managed to convince White people to be less crazy

It's such an amazing encapsulation of the Trump full circle, though. Fundies were furious and now they basically find it disgusting if a man is clean-cut, age-approriate spouse, etc
