Hi Bluesky! I'm Leah, a doctor and writer from Boston looking to make some new friends on here!

I love writing literary fiction and narrative essays exploring grief, family, and loss, both in and out of the hospital. Always down to talk music, books, and politics. Can't wait to meet you all!

Whenever I have the compulsion to write, I always think about this quote.

Joan Didion on grief:

"Here lies the heart of the difference between grief as we imagine it and grief as it is: the unending absence that follows, the void...the relentless succession of moments during which we will confront the experience of meaninglessness itself."

Reading East of Eden for the first time. Steinbeck never fails to absolutely take my breath away.

The entire novel is a dire warning of the dangers of idealism, as well as the fine line between deserved hope and delusion--and this quote is at the very heart of it.

No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man can store up in his ghostly heart.

I've never read a better explanation of why Russian short stories hit home the way they do.

"They were written to challenge and antagonize and outrage. And, in a complicated way, to console."

~George Saunders, A Swim in A Pond in the Rain

Can someone please explain why great ideas NEVER come to me when I am sitting at my desk trying to write, and instead exclusively appear, unprompted, when I am in the shower #writersky #writingcommunity #IAmWriting #booksky #writer #author

Yo! Shoutout to AOC & Bernie for leading by example — showing up, speaking truth & organizing w/the people, not just talking at them from D.C.

We need that same energy from all Dems. Whether it’s 35,000 or 35 people — show up. Hit the streets, hit the town halls, show you’re ready to fight for us.

I found that picking a single theme song for a story and listening to it before sitting down to write (and possibly also picking an hour long instrumental-only ambient track and listening to it on repeat while writing) can help a lot with remaining consistent, for example.
For everyone who is writing while balancing a full-time job: how do you manage to keep up your consistency and creativity? What do you do when you need to reset and recharge? What advice would you give to anyone in the same position?

I have worked with children of abuse, neglect, and adversity for many years and now work with adults who often have histories of trauma. This is absolutely appalling and hateful.
Trump eliminated the CDC’s Child Abuse, Neglect, and Adversity Team, which studied the effects of childhood trauma and promoted policies to keep kids safe.

For a 'Pro-Life' administration, they don't seem to care much for our childrens' well-being.

I cannot overstate the importance of reading books, particularly novels by respected authors, for critical thinking skills and reading comprehension. If the big gun novelists don't interest you, start small and work your way up. Or read whatever interests you. Just read. Or listen. It's all books.

Yes! Shirly Jackson was so adept at airing out this kind of overlooked darkness that exists in society. This story haunted me even when I was a kid.

As a child, I thought The Lottery was gratuitous and unrealistic.

As an adult, I see these lotteries everywhere. So many are happy to throw stones, until they, too, are targeted. #booksky

Choose 20 books that have stayed with you or influenced you.

One book per day for 20 days, in no particular order.

No explanations, no reviews, just covers. #booksky #bookchallenge #20bookchallenge

I don't think an ending of a short story has EVER hit me as hard as "In the Cemetery Where Al Jolson is Buried." Absolutely gutting, with or without context. #booksky
