The tragedy of his arc in TLJ is that this is now his chosen identity. He comes to realize that he doesn’t need to be defined by his blood legacy (Vader)…he can be his own person…but in his own mind that person is an unforgivable monster. It’s who he thinks he is “meant to be.”

This scene is not looked at closely enough by people I think. As Han shows his son continued unconditional love even as he has just been pierced by his blade, Ben for a moment looks remorseful over what he has just done. That’s the incredible thing that happens here.

Because why would he be hiding on an island if he wanted to be involved? It didn’t make any sense. He also looked really upset to see her to me. Look at that face! That is NOT the face of someone who wants to see that lightsaber handed to him!

Earliest draft of IX that we know of has him redeemed as he dies.

I see people try to say that Ben Solo returning to the light was some sort of like last minute addition to the story that was never planned but no, this is from the very first draft of IX that leaked. He always returned to the light. His story was NEVER meant to end with him still in darkness.

Just imagine it…what a fun title!
