Brooklyn and Staten Island have never felt father apart than the time my bro-in-law’s SI mother-in-law told us she takes half to half to work in an oatmilk carton so that no one will drink it.

It's a cicada summer and I can't get over that my 2yo calls them "the cadas" and our 4yo neighbor calls them "quesadillas."

It's time, yet again, to play an exciting round of "why does my fridge stink?"

The answer is always always always, "oh right, I chopped cauliflower and haven't cooked it yet."

You know how, before, rich kids could cheat because they had tutors and people to write essays for them? Does AI democratize cheating? My optimistic (naive) self wants to think this is a good thing because it will push us to change the way we assess kids in a way that doesn’t privilege wealth.

I’m really proud of having an unmedicated birth, but am really annoyed by the way we (all) talk about them in 2025 in the U.S. We need a “marathon paradigm of unmedicated birth”

The think about being an immigration attorney and a new home owner is that I am constantly accidentally googling "home deport"

Our aunt sent my brother’s new baby a beautiful quilt.

Unfortunately, her name is Claire Kristen.

The neighborhood Presbyterian church rummage sale is a wholesome event staffed exclusively by octogenarians. Bless them.

Some days I am so proud of myself for composting and some days all I can think about is how many private jets exist and my stupid little rotting pile.

My 2yo loves eating bananas in the groceries but doesn’t like the ends.

Which is why you will often hear me saying, “Don’t worry baby, I’ll eat the booty” at the local Trader Joe’s.

Last summer, my bro became a citizen and got a letter from the president in his naturalization packet. Boilerplate letter, obvs, but a welcoming sentiment.

Today my wife is becoming a citizen. No welcome letter.

Why can’t we raise the cap on tax-free childcare funds? It was $5k in 1986 when Congress passed the law and the average cost of daycare was $5k. It’s still $5k and the average cost is now $13k.

My 2yo’s increible daycare teacher is having a birthday party for herself during class time and has sent all the parents a message with her favorite cafe drinks and this is the kind of energy we all need in these dark times.

My 2yo, re: her doll: “Mami, I want to get Frida NAKED.”

Aforementioned Mami: “Baby, you have no idea how man men and women before you have said the same thing.”

Once time, in 2017, I saw this cake in a store window. In 2025, I still exclusively rate my well-being on a scale from top to bottom panda.

1/ With an immigration judge ruling that Mahmoud Khalil is deportable (a confusing concept), I thought a little primer on immigration court processes would be helpful.

Today I was clearing out invasive English Ivy and found this (also non-native, but naturalized) Lazarus Lizard 10 feet up in a tree. He hung with me for 15 minutes and even let me pet his back.

I did not anticipate that so much of my time as a mama would be spent saying “please stop putting the rocks in your mouth,” but maybe this means we have a budding geologist?

A few thoughts knocking around in my head as we document The Bad:

What ICE is doing is patently evil. It is, disgustingly, not illegal or new.

ICE is unabashedly abducting people. They are not “human trafficking” them (yet) because trafficking means “enslaving,” not moving people across borders.

Our local brewery gave me 10 used pallets to make my compost heap and I gave them homemade soap to thank them and this is the only economy I want to care about.
