I simply do not understand how the govt can simultaneously believe (1) they don’t have enough political capital to breach the manifesto on tax and (2) they have enough to political capital to pick an unwinnable fight with their own MPs on immigration.

I would love it if the BBC's response to allegations of bias were to become incredibly neutral... Farage been on QT forty times? Mo more until Greens have been on another 39 times to balance out the 5-MP parties, which means how many more for the Lib Dems?

He will have zillions of ways of minimising the tax he pays so we probably won't even notice he's gone.
An in-law adores trips to Dubai, and has some questionable business dealings. I am not sad to have no contact with him these days...

Yes, it must have been a tense time (understatement...) for a lot of people... everyone who knew in advance must have wondered how violent the backlash would be.
