I take issue with this argument.
Public support for COVID mitigation was always stronger than our policies reflected.
More importantly, that support was remarkably robust despite a coordinated, right-wing dark money fueled campaign to undermine it (which did radicalize a vocal minority).

It’s comforting fiction that it’s actually all just false consciousness and propaganda. But people didn’t like the Covid stuff at all and it radicalized some people in a wild direction. We can’t fight back against this stuff if we refuse to understand it and just tell ourselves soothing lies instead
