Today LA City Council voted to strengthen the LA rent stabilization law, so that increases will range from 1-4% instead of the current rule, 3-8%. This will affect hundreds of thousands of households. Congrats & thank you to everyone who fought so hard to win this!

LA reforms rent control for first time in 40 years, lowering rent hikes for most tenants
Under the reforms approved by a majority of City Council members, rent hikes would be capped at 4%, even if inflation in the overall economy runs higher.

It's been 5 months since the federal siege of LA began. In recent weeks, raids have not been as widely reported as they were over the summer. Community defense teams witnessed a dramatic uptick in kidnappings in Ktown, Pico-Union, MacArthur Park, Mid City, & Downtown LA

He said there was no room to sleep. People sat up, slept on the floor, standing up. He saw many pregnant women there too. The conditions were unbearable. His wife is horrified by his account.

Her husband was at Broadview one month and she was never able to talk to him. Not until he was already in Mexico. He had been in Chicago for 20 years. Her husband shared that the numbers of people there were astounding. It just makes me think how many people that are not counted/just disappeared.

Her husband told her that detainees at Broadview had to get up at 5am to get in line for one bathroom. He often peed himself. One time he had to wait until 2pm to use the bathroom. You could only use the bathroom once a day. He said the agents would beat you if you used the bathroom on yourself.

He said that the agents would throw food at them to eat. The agents threatened to withhold food for a week and to beat him up if he didn't sign deportation papers. He said he saw others refuse and get beaten/receive no food. He signed because he was afraid.

The County Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 on a motion to explore eviction moratorium options today. They put it on the agenda last minute, after we packed the room at their meeting on rent relief last week to instead demand an eviction moratorium!

Last week the LA County Board of Supervisors was set to discuss rent relief - instead we filled the room with people demanding an eviction moratorium. They will vote on exploring options tomorrow.

Tomorrow the @lacountybos.bsky.social will vote on "exploring options for an eviction moratorium" across all of LA County in response to the economic crisis caused by the ICE raids.

This motion was put on the agenda after we filled the meeting on Wednesday to tell them rent relief isn't enough.
