Oh hi it's me your pal Panic.

Strident literary feminist. Publishing desk job. Ran one marathon one time.

"Worryingly erotic." "Disagreeable, quite shouty." "Alienating, dangerous, and perverse."

I really thought it was worth recommending because people might -- like me, very reasonably -- feel a bit fatigued of the "masculinity" conversation, which is usually not done in good faith, or with care. But this feels like it comes from such a different place. I'm glad you agree!

I guess this is out of print now but I read it in the late 90s and it's great.
Bleak, Disturbing, Oz: Geoff Ryman – Was
I’ve had this book on my TBR for literal ages. It is one of the Gollancz Fantasy Masterworks, and it was nominated for a World Fantasy and a Locus Fantasy Award. It’s also about The Wiz…

Sam James had a "don't park in the bike lane" sign when they first started on Harbord. I wonder what happened to that. Of course, the lanes have been nicely upgraded now but it could get pretty dicey around there.

(I like how I both think and do not think I had strep in this example. Basically it wasn't the classic feeling of strep I was used to [used to get it a lot] but at the time had no other symptoms and couldn't figure out what it could be. The rest of the horror did arrive after four days or so.)

I hope it's easily solvable and if it is covid, remember to fuck off completely and rest well!

Both Covid and RSV have given me horrible nasty sore throat. The latter was so bad I actually thought it was strep and went to the doc about it! (It was not strep. I didn't THINK it was but it was so bad!)

If the sound of your voice changes at all and you're running a fever, that's definitely strep. The upside is the antibiotics work quickly.

I'll be thinking about it a lot I'm sure. Such an uncommon way of looking at common masculinity.

Also!!! I think there's something really gentle here, even though some of the things that happen aren't. Not kid gloves, not pulling punches, just a willingness to honesty? Something about authorial care in a world that lacks it. I dunno, I'm tired and have had two beers. Unexpected, this book.

Okay I've been discussing it for the last half hour. There's a LOT going on here and I maintain it's really good. It's deceptively simple but it's spurred so much considering and dialogue! I think the Booker got it right this year, and they don't always. Though I have 3 left to read.

Get this one!

It's both that and not really that. I don't know if I "enjoy" it, but it's good. I think it's really good. I have to finish it before I truly pronounce but it seems like a story about a "good man" who is only so by default. Because he's not a "bad man." Ok I'll come back in an hour when I'm done.

But first a nap because I did 13km of a thing after work and that's not nothing.

That C&H is a coffee table all on its own, if I'm thinking of the right one.

Like, it's not any LESS poncy than what someone would put out there for views. And I'm an actual person -- not a collection of affectations -- so I'd find it difficult to fenagle this anyway.
