The weird thing is that the last four games - MWII, MWIII, BO6 & BO7 - were direct continuations of the previous game. MWII was Infinity Ward, MWIII was Sledgehammer Games, and BO6 & 7 were Treyarch + Raven Software.

I watched a playthrough of BO7, and it really is just:

- A Co-op campaign with a sliding difficulty scale + open world aspects that effectively serves as a tutorial for an extraction shooter mode
- A story that is set between BO2 and BO3, while undermining the player choices offered in BO2
