Another little ol’ Kavanaugh stop
An 18yo US citizen, surrounded by eight masked, armed agents of the state, taken into custody, not read his rights, not offered a chance to contact a lawyer, proof of citizenship ignored, handcuffed so tightly he later required medical attention.

Profoundly, profoundly anti-American shit.

"I do feel like what we’re doing now, what Oilfield Witness is doing, is making a difference.” Still, for Wilson, the ultimate goal isn’t tighter methane rules—it’s an end to the age of combustion itself. “We have to stop burning things. We just don’t need to burn things for energy anymore.”
This Former Oil Worker Is Now Exposing Its Dirty Methane Emissions | Atmos
After fracking fouled her air and water, Sharon Wilson devoted her life to documenting the emissions fueling the climate crisis.

A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.

Kavanaugh stop
NEWS: Federal agents crashed with woman’s car, pointed guns at her, dragged her out by legs, tossed her in a minivan, held her and (eventually) let her go without charges. This as Chicagoans say the immigration blitz is out of control. (DHS blames her.)

Chicago woman dragged out of her car after colliding with ICE demands accountability
The arrest of Dayanne Figueroa highlights growing concerns about the use of force against U.S. citizens and due process. She was released after a few hours without charges.

I’m mad at America for electing Trump.

#notAllAmericans - but too dang many.
🚨BIG changes happening -- ICE leadership is being purged tonight. The old guard, which prioritized targeted enforcement operations aimed at people with criminal records, is being replaced with Border Patrol and Gregory Bovino's "Midway Blitz" style.

Think things are bad now? It'll get worse.

Big kudos to PSF. Bravo
TLDR; The PSF has made the decision to put our community and our shared diversity, equity, and inclusion values ahead of seeking $1.5M in new revenue. Please read and share. pyfound.blogspot.com/2025/10/NSF-...

Losing Pax Americana is a really big deal.

That the current GOP is so consumed by short-term selfishness that they cast aside Pax Americana without caring, is at best sad. And, the transition - to what, Pax Sinica? - could be very - euphemistically - “messy”
Watch this and listen carefully.

Singapore PM on the change in the global order given the US is no longer the insurer of stability - a sentiment that will go beyond the current administration. But nobody else has stepped in building a foundation of multipolarity amid turbulence.

The Department of Homeland Security created a new job — “deputy assistant secretary for elections integrity” — then gave it to a known election denier. We debunk her false claims:

Oh man. Lindsey Halligan didn’t come across all that impressive before. But this…. Oooh, this is not good
EXCLUSIVE: One Saturday afternoon in October, my phone lit up with a notification.

I glanced down at the message.

“Anna, Lindsey Halligan here,” it began.

So began my text exchange with the woman who is prosecuting the president's perceived political enemies.

More than 20 citizens held for day or more, incommunicado

I’ve believed for a long time that the liberal-conservative spectrum is strongly associated with population density. Looks like that association has only gotten stronger recently.

What is a legitimate reason for anyone to desire let alone trust Russia’s “findings” on who assassinated JFK?

It sounds crazy to me.

An afternoon's desktop review of Fjernvarme Fyn (Odense, Denmark) district heating, including a Meta data center as a heat source.
This is a low-grade review. Please don't think that my mind is made up on data center heat recapture for district heating. It's complicated. But, I caution DH advocates.
That site plugs into a mature/extensive district heating grid. It cost either 216M DKK or 260M DKK (US$32M-$39M). In 2020-2022, production was significantly below target. ->

John Oliver delivers, as expected.

Bari Weiss makes herself an easy target: so much of her record is indelibly public. The crazy thing is that in this fractured media ecosystem, it doesn't matter. She can be blatantly wrong, and be criticized for it, and her core audience won't care.

One very human pattern that bothers me is “why don’t they just.”

I gently ask of you, dear reader, to start with the presumption that people with decades of experience in $billion industries have thought of everything that you might come up with in an offhand tweet.
It's a really interesting question, whether data centers are going to keep bloating based on economies of scale or whether they will eventually start going modular & distributed like ... everything else.

Today is (or was, depending) Columbus Day.

I can’t encourage you enough to go read 1493 by the very thoughtful Charles Mann @charlescmann.bsky.social.

1493 engages frankly with the changes wrought upon the world from connecting Europe to Asia through the Americas.

Fascinating, and educational.
