On the western edge of Magna Roman Fort at Carvoran, close to Hadrian's Wall, this sycamore tormented and bent by prevailing westerlies is heir apparent to the famous sycamore of Gap fame. Certainly its position on the rampart of the fort makes it a statement tree in terms of the historic frontier.

Early start for me! These purple lines are all verified #SlowWays walking routes that have been triple-checked.

I've been wanting to make this connection for a while!

#Sherborne to #Tisbury via #Stalbridge #Marnhull #Shaftesbury and a bit of #CranborneChase.

Let's see how I get on... 🤞🏻

Yesterday during a walk in a Yorkshire wood, I spotted beech trees with rippled bark. And possibly a sycamore with rippled bark (- the timber is worth a lot more as the ripple shows in the grain pattern).
An interesting phenomenon.

My avatar tree is a larch tree that I used to admire whilst driving up the Struggle from Ambleside to Kirkstone Pass. Sadly it has keeled over in the recent storms, possibly also affected by ramorum disease.
