The point of excluding categories of people from the military like this is to send the message that they are unworthy of citizenship, it is pure bigotry and the assumptions behind it are disproven by the honorable service of the people being targeted in the first place bsky.app/profile/bran...
If transgender service members don't voluntarily agree to resign, they'll be forced by the Defense Department to repay the signing bonuses they received at enlistment. Not only will they be fired, they'll be punished with thousands of dollars in debt. All for attempting to serve their country.

Florida doesn’t need its own DOGE, it needs a new Governor. We won’t be lectured on “waste” by the guy who:

➡️ Used taxpayer dollars for political campaigning
➡️ Allocated $250M to look tough on immigration

Thanks to @bradvivian.bsky.social for this history of "institutional neutrality," which shows that many of the same conservative think tanks now cheering on anti-CRT and DEI bans drove the push to silence universities on charged questions. www.chronicle.com/article/inst...

- there is no longer a faculty diversity committee
- there is no longer a “law and equality” grad course requirement
- there are no more diversity or inclusion offices
- Tbd whether students will be able to have supportive affiliation groups
- tbd on curricular changes
As a late Friday pm valentine, faculty & staff received an email from University of Cincinnati President Pinto stating that Trump’s DoE has “effectively outlawed” DEI and that diktat is “sweeping in [its] scope, categorical in its conclusions & pressing in its timing.”

The NIH’s drastic cut to indirect cost rates is a critical threat to U.S. research infrastructure
The drastic reduction in indirect costs is not a path to innovation or cost savings — it’s a threat to U.S.’s position as global leader in medical research.

Don’t let professional niceties blind you to normalizing a ridiculously stupid and dangerous perspective as having any merit at all. Call it out clearly, while you still can.
worth saying that vermeule’s view that “separation of powers means the president is an elected despot” is fucking stupid and has no basis in the constitution as written
they’re going to do it. it’s going to happen. they’ll burn the whole thing down.

Every university I’ve worked at has had a rate around 50-60% for federal grants. This pays for the entire research structure of the universities. Private grants don’t pay this, which is why universities need federal grants.
⚠️ Effective Monday 2/10/25, NIH indirect rate capped at 15%. Applies to existing & future grants.

—> Deep budget cuts & program closures coming to a university near you.

Is this the break the glass moment for university administrators who have been silent so far about the attack on science?
