The Wrong Prescription – Why Labour Must Rethink Its Approach To Asylum
By Rathi Guhadasan The Socialist Health Association condemns the asylum reforms announced this week by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, which represent a deeply concerning erosion of fundamental health and human rights protections for some of the most vulnerable people in our society. A Betrayal of Health Equity Principles The proposal to make refugee status temporary, subject to regular review every 30 months, and to extend the pathway to settlement from five to twenty years creates a system of prolonged insecurity that is fundamentally incompatible with public health principles.

European rearmament and the drive to war
Carol Turner previews this Saturday’s upcoming CND Conference. Labour Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced what she says are “the most sweeping asylum reforms in modern times.” Modelled on Danish legislation that is widely regarded as the most oppressive in Europe, her long list of measures includes lengthening the time before which leave to remain can be granted from 5 to 20 years, and making deporting undocumented migrants easier.

The Home Secretary’s new immigration plans are divisive and xenophobic.

Scapegoating migrants will not fix our public services or end austerity.

The Government must fundamentally change course. Refugees are welcome here.

The real cause of deprivation in communities across the UK is not people seeking asylum, but billionaire elites who defend their power by seeking to divide the working class.

Labour MPs must speak out and vote against these changes to asylum policy.
Simon Opher becomes the latest Labour MP to criticise Mahmood's immigration crackdown.

He says: "We should stop the scapegoating of immigrants because it's wrong and cruel ... we should push back on the racist agenda of Reform rather than echo it."

Alf Dubs is right. We need more compassion in our politics.

Labour adopting anti-refugee rhetoric risks emboldening Reform to promote even more racist and radical measures against migrant communities.

Government asylum reforms greeted with outrage within Labour
“The Home Secretary sounds like a Reform supporter,” said Nigel Farage. “Well done patriots,” said Tommy Roboinson. Shabana Mahmood’s proposed reforms to Britain’s immigration rules have drawn fulsome support from some obnoxious quarters – and outrage from Labour MPs and progressives. There is so much wrong with the new regime proposed for refugees that it is difficult to know where to begin.

The government should be ashamed that its migration policies are being cheered on by Tommy Robinson and Reform.

Instead of standing up to anti-migrant hate, this is laying the foundations for the far-right.

I questioned the Home Secretary on how she can be proposing such obviously cruel policies.

By Glyn Robbins I don’t usually share this story. But, on the day the Labour government (“a Labour government”) introduces laws that, when I was growing up in multi-ethnic East London, were the preserve of the National Front, I feel compelled. In late 2010, I was asked (via the local Palestine Solidarity Campaign) if I knew of anyone with a spare room for a Syrian asylum seeker who was homeless and sleeping on the floor of a Brick Lane restaurant.
