How do data journalists get their kicks at home?

Setting up automations to remind us about the dog walker and check whether the dog needs his coat or not.

Most people get their data online nowadays, but I still like to drive down to the data centre on Saturday and go round with a trolley to stock up for the week, picking out the freshest-looking data, seeing what's on offer, having a chat at the checkout, dodging the Russian scammers in the car park

Binge watched #ThePaper and I think I will need “sad dead journalist” played at my funeral.

Why Visual Journalism is so slow?

I've tracked every hour I worked on an article for two weeks last year. Most of my time did not go into graphics production but in researching and analyzing data.

The detailed breakdown and some ideas how to speed up the process: nightingaledvs.com/why-visual-j...

Fascinating (and terrifying) analysis here from @sonjatutty.bsky.social based on data from Friends of the Earth on the areas most at risk of dangerous heatwaves.

She's mapped the data down to a neighbourhood level.

NEW: Southport Disorder Convictions

Analysis of police data reveals over 500 people were convicted for offences linked to the mass disorder after the Southport killings last year. @hopenothate.org.uk said the quick crackdown had a temporary "damping effect" on the far right

NEW: Ambulance Abuse

Over 22,500 incidents of violence and abuse against ambulance staff were reported last year, the highest figure on record

@aace.org.uk said low conviction rates and lenient sentences are "failing to deter offenders", and called for preventative measures

Despite the cute map, worth noting the most common incident reported at matches last season was hate crime.

Hate crime was reported at 420 matches (just six of these were women's football).

A lot more work is needed so everyone can feel safe at matches, according to @kickitoutofficial.bsky.social.
Available now for @radar-ai.bsky.social subscribers - Manchester United fans were arrested the most last season.

As well as stories for your local club, @sonjatutty.bsky.social also created this adorable map.

Just saw a post on LinkedIn say that anything with an em dash was DEFINITELY 100% AI because... there's no em dash key on a standard keyboard.

That's enough LinkedIn for the day.

Party colour - brown
As someone who puts abbreviations for political parties in spreadsheets, I counsel them not to call their party Assemble.
Politico reports that the left-wing grouping of independents in the Commons (Inc Corbyn) has been "formalising its operation lately, hiring staff to work for the group rather than individual MPs and debating how to go about potentially becoming a proper party." They're discussing a name (Assemble?)

Very… interesting vibe in Dundee this evening as the town is filled with graduates all dressed up alongside news crews getting a front row seat to the uni imploding.

Plus someone seems to have let off some stink bombs👌
