"With beautiful prose reminiscent of Patricia McKillip, Johansen paints a bleak and devastating picture of a cold world where humans, fey, and near-fey struggle for control of an unforgiving land." ~ Jo Graham (on The Wolf and the Wild King)

Something doesn't have to be graphic to dig its claws into the cracks of your mind, for sure.

Uh oh! Some aspects are certainly nightmarish; hopefully they will stay out of my dreams.

Midnight of the Spirit by Phil Rickman, due to your post yesterday. I'd put a hold on a couple of later ones the library had, decided I didn't want to wait, bought an ebook labelled "collection 1" which turns out to be books 2&3. I am really enjoying the folk-horror/mystery aspect & the characters.

I saw an ebook omnibus labelled 1 and bought it and it turns out to be books 2&3 (weird?), so I am now well started into Midwinter of the Spirit. I will have to go back and read Wine of Angels after. I am really enjoying it and can see I will probably end up slowly collecting the whole series.

I hadn't heard of these but now I've put holds on what I guess are the first two, or at least the earliest-published two that are in the provincial library system. They sound like what I'm in the mood to read!
