my first boss as a planner turned me into a dark sky fanatic. lighting is probably one of those things that seems annoying and excessive in zoning codes but it's so important. yimby as long as it's darksky approved cut off fixtures

how to let people know there's no one working on your housing policy who's ever worked on housing policy before
In urban policy, it is considered bad for someone to be rent-burdened (spending at least 30% of their income on rent). But Cuomo's newly proposed law would *require* that people be rent-burdened. Absolutely insane.

trying to create a third position between "nimbyism" and "yimbyism" where i think building new stuff is good but i think that the new stuff that is getting built is bad because it looks stupid and is usually built really poorly

what sucks about "Abundance" discourse is that the movement is a trojan horse - a way to smuggle bad ideas about tech, anti-labor, crypto etc into Dem politics by wrapping them inside normal and fine ideas about housing, green energy, transit etc.

The people colluding to create housing shortages in order to jack up the price of homes and rent are mostly single family homeowners, not nefarious corporate actors; and they’re doing it in public at your local planning commission, not in smoke-filled conference rooms or whatever.
