Just noticed Chrome dev tools has #gemini built in to help with CSS. I haven't had a great experience with #ChatGPT when it comes to CSS help; curious whether Gemini will be any better.

Scientists as political advocates
Science, both teaching and doing, is under attack. The recent US presidential election of a person and platform with anti-science bias exemplifies this. The study of climate processes and patterns and...

One of the things I love about primary school here in Japan is that they really emphasize understanding the role of the local community, and one's own role within it.

My daughter goes on regular field trips to local establishments - small businesses, preschools, even Shinto shrines. She learns

My daughter is learning her times tables in school, and I’m supposed to help her drill. Cool, I got this.

But it turns out in Japan, they have to learn a very specific way of pronouncing every equation. Sometimes you say the “equals” as “ga,” but other times you just omit it! Sometimes instead of

A record 146,000 public school students in New York City were homeless last year, data shows. Almost all of those students were living either in shelters across the city or “doubled up” temporarily with friends or family.

If you're familiar with #Japanese, you know there are a lot of borrowed words that came from English. For example:

corn -> kōn
computer -> kompyūtā
label -> raberu

One of my favorite things is when my #bilingual kids learn the Japanese (borrowed) version first, and then at some point try to

When I tell people I played basketball at MIT, their first reaction almost always is, "MIT has sports??"

Yes they do, and they're damn good at a lot of them. The women's bball program is a lot stronger now than when I was there, and there's some real talent that's been coming through the program.

Question for #teachers especially #mathteachers: why are kids required to copy down the actual word problem question for homework? As in, not just rewriting it as an equation, but word for word copying the question. Is this meant to help with the understanding somehow?

Anyone have a favorite #teacher story? I'll start.

I took Calculus at a summer school program, and it remains one of my all-time favorite classes. Part of it was the material, sure, but a large part was how my teacher framed the lectures. (1/5)
