Feed a series of prompts into the chat bar, read and revise the output, then feed in back in for a final edit or...just write the thing myself?

Comply with the steady undermining of everything that matters to me or...not?

This doesn't seem complicated.
No one can tell me a single good use for it, for me. I have asked. Not a one.
What am I supposed to use it for? To summarize my emails? Too long, wrong. To write things? Too long, wrong. To plan trips? Planning is FUN and why would I outsource that? I played with it a bit six months ago, it was meh.

Also, I hate its enshittification of search results with my whole soul.

Quoting so I can find this again easily. Truest words I've read to characterize this moment and the social media choices I'm making these days.
(But I sincerely think we’ve been invited to our own collective social death and I’m going to do the best I can to rsvp no.)

Note that UCLA is a Big 10 school. Academic Senates or Faculty Councils are 14 of the 18 Big 10 schools have endorsed the creation of a mutual academic defense compact (MADC), which, if enacted, would certainly be a great way to fight this sort of this together. ✊✏️✊
Breaking: NSF is suspending roughly 300 grants with UCLA, following a DOJ finding on Tuesday that the university violated Title VI by "creating a hostile educational environment for Jewish and Israeli students."

Here's what I'm thinking about this 4th of July. (I'm older.)
I’m going to be very honest and clear.

I am fully preparing myself to die under this new American regime. That’s not to say that it’s the end of the world. It isn’t. But I am almost 50 years old. It will take so long to do anything with this mess that this is the new normal for *me*.

In case you need another argument for academic/faculty unions. The 2025-26 salary program announced for the University of Illinois system is 1% across the board. Unionized NTTs at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign get (on average) 2.5%. Love my union, NTFC Local #6546! ✊✏️✊

Explanation of how the symbolism of today’s military parade is even more f*cked up than the mere fact of a military parade conveys.
Some thoughts about the military parade in my hometown of Washington DC today -- specifically, the route. Military parades in DC are quite rare. But when they happen, they have always begun, symbolically and geographically, at the Capitol and moved outward. 1/

It’s a difficult proposition for undergrads to work through, but choosing a major isn’t really about what kind of jobs you want to do so much as what sorts of questions you want to think about or *how* you want to think about questions throughout your life.

This explains a lot.
Learning from my university students that in high school, they got notifications on their phones whenever a grade was inputted into Canvas has … been an eye-opener about the fragmentation of learning into tiny gamified tasks they do not create themselves 🫤

New office art! Can’t wait to get this mounted on the wall — a celebration of early C19 US history created right here on campus by @skeuomorphpress.org and my colleague @ryancordell.org.

When the scroll of woe here yields up an invitation like this, who am I to resist? The bar is in walking distance and serves local beer. The closing rendition of “Sons & Daughters,” with some additional musicians from the audience joining in on stage, was unexpectedly healing.
Our new Decemberists cover band—made up of 2 librarians & a lapsed English professor, so the only options were the Decemberists or Mountain Goats—will debut with three songs at the local Hootenanny tonight.

We’ll start off with “Everything Is Awful” because those are the 2025 vibes

This exciting resolution from Rutgers University Senate is exactly the kind of model I think higher ed needs: a mutual defense pact of, in this case, Big 10 schools. They call for member institutions to create a joint defense fund and make resources available to any member institution under attack.

Since it apparently needs to be said: As a Jew who works on a university campus, I am safest in a country that protects academic freedom and liberal values of due process of law. Anyone who supports extrajudicial detention of students for "wrong" ideological opinions is not doing it for my safety.

Hey everyone -- Moms of Liberty and Dept of Education launched a snitch line portal today to rat out teachers and anyone promoting anything DEI.

FLOOD THE PORTAL

Spam the hell out of it.

Pass it on! It works!

Other small ideas for things to do. I absolutely promise it will make you feel better than doing nothing.
Thirty lonely but beautiful actions you can take right now which probably won't magically catalyze a mass movement against Trump but that are still wildly important
Why? Because others will see you do them, and it will make it easier for them to take their own (slightly less lonely but equally beautiful) action by your side
