#MosaicMonday takes us into a corridor with linear #fresco decoration and an intact geometric #mosaic floor, c. 150 CE, in the stupendous #VilladeiQuintili along the #Appia south of #Rome. The villa was the cause of its builders' death: #Commodus had them killed and took it. #AncientBluesky 🏺
MOSAIC FLOOR, C. 150-182 CE. VILLA DEI QUINTILI This massive suburban villa was built by the rich senatorial brothers Sextus Quintilius Valerius Maximus and Sextus Quintilius Condianus, who were held in such high regard by Antoninus Pius that he made them both consuls in 151 CE. Unfortunately their service and loyalty did not protect them from the envy of the last of the Antonines, Caracalla, who so badly wanted this luxurious property that he trumped up treason charges against them and put them to death in 182. He immediately took possession of the villa and adapted it to his own use; it remained an imperial property until the C6 and underwent many restorations and alterations. Here we have a short, semi-basement corridor with a simple geometric pattern of rows of black alternating triangles to create white hexagons between them, framed with a wide black mosaic border.

Trevesia burckii produces otherworldly leaves the shape of snowflakes. This formation may be an adaptation to help sunlight filter down to lower leaves, helping the plant photosynthesize in shaded forests.

Eloise, my 9 year old toad, changes colour with the season. Today she's wearing her best autumn colours. Toads alter their skin colour using pigment-containing cells that expand or contract in response to temperature and light. Soon she'll turn dark brown as the nights get cold.

Lacrymaria olor means "swan tear" in Latin, referring to their tear-shape & swan-like neck that can extend 30 times the length of the cell.

They're eukaryotes, like us, but single-celled & ciliated.

They live in pond water, where they're predators of... just about *everything*.

The cleaning of the world’s largest #Roman floor mosaic, covering around 1050 sqm. It was discovered during the construction of a hotel in Antakya/Turkey. The shifting of the ground during an earthquake has caused a a ripple effect.

A 12 petal, red-tipped flower design from a late 4th century AD mosaic set down in the dining room of #Littlecote Roman villa #Wiltshire

Found in 1729, then thought to be lost and destroyed

Found again in 1977 and still visible today

A lot of small birds take a bit of time splashing in shallow water when they bath.
Not swallows.
This barn swallow flew directly into the marsh at Mach 5, completely submerged for a second, and then exploded out in a shower of water drops to continue on its way!
