Even established authoritarian regimes consider arresting defiant judges an extreme tactic—a serious escalation usually reserved for after one-party rule is firmly entrenched. Seeing a judge arrested in the US today should alarm everyone who values democratic governance. This cannot be allowed. 🧵

Competitive authoritarianism implies the outcome is not predetermined; that there is "meaningful" contestation for power

Trump et al. have 2-4 years to rig the next elections. Given their operational speed (and the Democrats ambivalence), the risk is they don't stop at competitive authoritarianism
Folks keep wondering when we’ll know if 🇺🇸 is no longer a democracy/republic & I keep wondering why folks are asking the question in the future tense.
This is a straight-up violation of the Hatch Act and several other federal statutes. But it doesn't matter anymore. The Trump administration doesn't enforce any law against itself.

In diesem Spiel kann man nur verlieren.

Es ist Zeit, Klartext zu reden. Statt uns in leeren Phrasen und Buzzwords zu verlieren, sollten wir realisieren, dass wir ein Problem mit Rechts haben.

Despite Wikipedia's NPOV policy, articles often carry sentiment. Take a look at this word cloud illustrating frequent terms in Russian-language Wikipedia articles about regional executives... not everyone's buying into the regime's narratives

They claim universal suffrage, but my analysis of elections from 1970-2020 in electoral autocracies tells a different story: strategic and informal adjustments of suffrage to secure political survival. I made a quick chart using
Freedom House's 2023 data. The last few years have seen some countries fluctuating between 'Partially Free' and 'Not Free'. The trends look much more dramatic when looking at population-weighted data.
