Climate science PhD and aspiring polyglot. I study the atmosphere (aerosols/clouds) and the Arctic, not always at the same time. Still trying to figure out this site; also life, the universe, everything. she/her/ella
Hey all! How’s everyone’s apocalypse going? (sigh) Just dropping in to share a couple of events coming up that may be of interest:

Hey y’all. Everything continues to be a mess and I can’t really look at the news. But in the interest of local action making us feel less hopeless, maybe people are interested in our next Sustainability Speaker Series webinar about preventing pollution runoff? www.eventbrite.com/e/cleaner-st...

Our schedule is almost full 🎉, but we could still use US-based meteorologists and climate scientists to speak in the overnight period on late Friday/early Saturday and late Saturday/early Sunday. If you're a night owl, or living in Alaska or Hawaii, we'd love to have you! wclivestream.com/speakers/

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut.

This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

People might think that whatever destruction is done to science in the US, we can undo in 4 years with a Democratic president and Congress.

The problem is that many areas require specialized knowledge and skills built up over years, and once that's lost, it's hard to get back.
The damage will be far worse than just a 4-yr gap. Both I and the individual who has managed this site for most of the past 50 yrs are retiring within the next 2 years. With this closure, we will not be able to plan a transition.

It is perfectly legal to know your rights and to educate others about them, too.

EVERYONE in the United States, citizen or not, has rights. I will not allow this administration to intimidate us from helping you know about them.

The world is a fascist dumpsterfire right now, but in an effort to minimize my spiraling by focusing more local, please join us at tonight’s Sunnyvale Sustainability Speaker Series event, with @christinatoms.bsky.social, for a discussion about wetland restoration www.eventbrite.com/e/restoring-...

For some reason thinking of this today, who can say why youtu.be/IFAMpW0hPNY?...

Overly-simplified context: in the late 80s, after 15 years of dictatorship, Chile did a referendum vote on the dictator Pinochet; ‘yes’ = ‘you can stay a dictator forever’, ‘no’ = democratic elections again. ‘No’ won.

I regret to say that I immediately flashed to some science papers I have read recently, where the authors confusingly use $50 words when $10 words would absolutely suffice, and probably make everything clearer :x

I guess I should start a new self-quote over here: it continues to be SO WEIRD how I always get review requests in clusters!

The way I see it, it took us ~20y to even get to where we got with the Paris Accords. Even IF we understood aerosols well enough to robustly say it would help & not harm, it would take ages to set up our human systems to do albedo mod responsibly. Whereas solar/weatherization/etc are *right there*!
Interesting profile/interview w/ David Keith in the NYT about solar geoengineering. The article hints at what my main objection to this line of research is, but isn't explicit, so here's a quick thread on my thoughts...

This Scientist Has a Risky Plan to Cool Earth. There’s Growing Interest.
David Keith wants to spray a pollutant into the sky to block some sunlight. He says the benefits would outweigh the danger.

This is actually my nightmare.

(Have they also invented AI to read and process those crap papers with their AI definitely-brains? For whomst are they “writing”??)
Scientists: We need to slow down the publication race and produce higher quality papers at a slower rate to make the literature manageable again.

Engineers: We hear you. Now every lab in the world will be able to produce hundreds of medium-quality papers (with a few mistakes in each) every week.

It’s super covidy out there folks! If you don’t want to get sick (or get others sick), now is a great time to take precautions (masks, ventilation, outdoor stuff, avoiding crowds, the usual). And for the sake of others, please stay home (or at least mask up) if you feel unwell and/or test positive!
This Covid surge is now higher than last summer's, and it's showing no signs of peaking yet www.cdc.gov/nwss/rv/COVI...

I seriously know about 7 unconnected people who have/had had covid the past month or so (including a couple that tested - on rapids for 2 days before +). The wastewater values are ridiculous. Please stay home if you’re sick.
Lots of people have Covid right now so just as a PSA:

* A rapid test essentially measures how much virus is in your nose right now.

* If you’re positive on a rapid test, you’re producing a lot of virus. Good to assume you’re contagious. Maybe less so at the end.

PSA for whoever needs to hear it: hepatitis B can be chronic and dramatically increases your risk of liver cancer and Asian Americans are extremely disproportionately affected. So if you can, get tested so you know whether to monitor it.

34 is too damn young.

Maybe I shouldn't say this out loud but I has been extremely frustrating watching protestors show they are willing to mask up when their own safety is at risk but not when it's for the safety of the disabled and immunocompromised. And now masks are gonna be banned because of it.
“Immunocompromised people shouldn’t be gathering in large groups anyway” is making me cry today, man. They’re saying the quiet part out loud and the only people I see really making noise about this are those of us who will be completely shut out of public life if these bans go through

Mask bans are evil and dystopian and I am appalled that they’re even being proposed. Wearing masks to protect your health and the health of others needs to be recognized as a right for all and an absolutely essential protection for those who would otherwise be unable to participate in society

YMMV by location, but many places also have boards and commissions e.g. Sustainability, Library, Bicycle and Pedestrians… we love it when people show up so it’s not just us talking to ourselves.

Although we appreciate less bullying energy, more Leslie Knope “people [constructively] caring at us” :)
Do you need something to be mad at all the time? Want an excuse to bully people and start fights?

Instead of taking this desire out on social media might I suggest an alternative:

It's called your local city council meeting and we actually desperately need that energy there
