I find it soothing to read a story that has no ambition or justification beyond being odd. It's hard to find a good one, that doesn't try too hard or sound affected, or end up trying to discipline its own ideas, but rather carelessly introduces unusual concepts—at first your brain flails a bit,

I love reading sad books because when your own grief is stopped up inside you like a clogged drain, you can grieve for a character on a page and understand that you're also grieving for yourself a little bit.
