IMO, the most revealing part is Klein wrestling with the question of where "the line" is (between acceptable and unacceptable politics). Realizing that what he considered past the line is now the GOP mainstream doesn't make him commit harder to fighting it. He wonders if he needs to move the line.

Yeah, last year I wrote about a 1993 Time column that is beat-for-beat the same complaints about college kids you hear today.¹ Year before that I wrote about how “woke” companies were just updated “p.c.” gripes.²

This piece gets at something that I've been struggling to articulate: We've seen this exact push-pull before. When Republicans were out of power in the 1990s they invented "political correctness" to pretend they were being censored. Then they went right back to censoring once they had power again.

In my opinion, we are very lucky he is not more of a hawk
But I fear it’s only a matter of time before he realizes the only way for him to achieve the historical fame and legacy he craves is to win a war against some helpless enemy
