Candlesnuff Fungus (Xylaria hypoxylon)
A richly detailed macro photograph of Candlesnuff fungus (Xylaria hypoxylon) sprouting from a bed of vibrant green moss on a fallen log. The slender fruiting bodies of the fungus rise like tiny sculptures, their shapes resembling extinguished candles or the branching antlers of a stag, which lends them their nickname, "stag’s horn fungus." Candlesnuff fungus is a common decomposer in woodland ecosystems, thriving on decaying wood and contributing to nutrient cycling in the soil. Its unique appearance and dual textures—smooth and velvety—capture the delicate yet vital role fungi play in breaking down organic material. This photograph highlights the fascinating microcosm of the forest floor, celebrating the beauty and function of a species often overlooked in the grander forest landscape.

I really like old herbarium illustrations. Last year I wrote some software to parse, score, and process the Oxford 400 herbarium dataset to remove the paper background and select the best photos.

Terrible news today:

This year, one-third of coral cover has been destroyed in two northern sections of the Great Barrier reef due to anthropogenic heating.

Results for the southern sections (which were even hotter) have not been officially released.

A Pearl-spotted Owlet on the wing. This image is one of a burst I managed to get of this bird in flight in Akagera National Park. This species is one of a few diurnal owl species, which makes it a lot easier to photograph than others!
