Ok, quick thread on why DeepSeek is blowing up assumptions about LLMs and maybe the whole (U.S.) AI industry. Trying to tie up some loose ends before a Christmas break. Just submitted my second review of the day. Email inbox is in decent shape. An AOM proposal still needs some work. Large amounts of coffee are being consumed.

Highly recommend Jana's book, thoughtful and diligent fieldwork and a breeze to read (I can imagine this working quite nicely for a UG/PG elective).

I decided to give ChatGPT a try, to see what all the fuss is about. Its responses were staggeringly vivid and realistic.

But there was something slightly off too. The uncanny valley of prose. I couldn't put my finger on it until I read this passage from Soul Music (Terry Pratchett, Discworld #16).

Proud to celebrate the Finnish independence day in Liverpool today! Despite pesky internet rumours, I can confirm my home country does and has indeed existed for 107 years now.

And yes, I did got to sauna this morning (at the wonderful Wyld on the docks).
