During my latest NAACP v. Alabama #freespeech research at the Library of Congress this week, I came across this NAACP membership card. It's a very important part of my research; the card expired at the same time that AL obtained a TRO ousting the NAACP from that state for 8 years!

Anyone in the DMV area… Can you tell me whether Second Story Books in Rockville is still as good as it used to be?

I've just received the first proofs of my forthcoming #freespeech Journal of Supreme Court History article. I had forgotten that I had included this memorial tribute to my friend, Ken Kersch. Now I'm crying buckets again.

Traditionally, I should’ve made these English mince pies on Christmas Eve, but hey, better late than never.

As I work on my next article about the crafting of the landmark #freespeech #SCOTUS decision in NAACP v. Alabama, I'm so grateful to all of the archivists who helped me amass these copies of all of the drafts. I cannot do my work without #archivists

#OTD 88 years ago, #SCOTUS heard concluding oral arguments in West Coast Hotel v. Parrish. So grateful for Elsie Parrish's bravery, and for the help, for my ‘21 book about the case, provided by the family members of her and the lawyers.

Seeing the sunrise and sunset over, and then walking across the Edmund Pettus bridge, is as emotional as one might imagine.

These magical archives are my research home for a couple of weeks. Today they yielded this off-topic, but decidedly historically fascinating letter.

I can only imagine the conversations Ruth and Sandra are already having.

For my current extensive #freespeech historical research project, I am in almost daily contact with #archivists at various institutions around the country. I am constantly reminded of how wonderfully helpful these people are.

Does anyone have access to the Western Political 1/4ly from 1959, who would be able to send me a copy of an article from that year? I can’t seem to find it open access anywhere. Thank you in advance.

I love it when the mail brings used books that are immediately useful for my current work research project. The fact that the books have that old book smell is a wonderful bonus 😂

Privileged to be back at the Library of Congress doing more free speech archival research.
