Sizzling, surreal, to be charged w so much imminent radical change not at all yet set in motion. To not WANT the seismic changes, but need them. To not know what the final picture will look like, OR even know if I CAN solve it successfully. But all this roil does get me closer. ⚡️🌊

Haha yes I was literally thinking about the Canadian Shack challenge with this example! Or "Five Things That Aren't True" and how that turned into contemporary "5 + 1." The prose styles of this era had more crossover with pro sff than romance, despite the sexual/romance content, imo.

which as you note 100% is in a feedback loop with pro romance, both in trope-forward marketing techniques and general aspects of literary craft. Fic used to be SO much more stylistically diverse before it was so centrally located! This is bittersweet to me

Yes, completely! And yes haha I was around for the transition from mailing lists and individually hosted websites to LJ so I have a long perspective. Something I've been very interested in too is what I see as a trans-fandom flattening of prose styles/plot structures which I call "AO3 house style"

I really appreciated this piece - thank you for thoughtfully weaving together so many strands! I've observed the same demographic and cultural shifts and been mystified in a "I guess kids these days are different" 🤷 but the way you tied it into contemporary information practices makes sense 🥲

For 10+ years hs has been synonymous with the sensation of further damaging the tendons of my triceps & wrist. It feels electric and sleepy-safe to touch the wire without pain. ⚡️🌷☁️ I told my coach I can only see my 🤸 ex in public cafes, with her as a chaperone. Trust is its own transformative gift.
