"Why Fascists Fear Teachers: Public Education and the Future of Democracy" by Randi Weingarten

"A rousing defense of public education as the cornerstone of American democracy, by the woman attacked by the far right as 'the most dangerous person in the world'"

"Two Brothers" by Ben Elton (Swan Press edition, 2013)
The synchronicity of this book with current events is uncanny. Berlin in 1936 looks a lot like DC in 2025.
It's historical fiction, heavy on the history
(recommended to me by a reader in England)

Supporting local authors, diverse viewpoints, and the right to love who you love. It's a trifecta.

"How to Change You Mind", by Michael Pollan
Equal parts history and chemistry, science and mythology, Pollan attempts to bridge the gap between what we believe about consciousness, and what we experience.
I don't agree with him on some points, a little dilettante at times, but a good overview.

Bookseller or graphics human question
I use a flatbed scanner to create images of books - this works well for covers; not set up for photos. If I want to include images of internal pages, the scanner is problematic.
I'm thinking a handheld scanner. Yes/no?

Best served warm with butter. Honey optional.

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I love to discuss books, promote books, review books ... and just generally share my love of books.
I also sell books, but in this moment I'm more concerned about the wave of book bans, the de-funding of libraries, and the attacks on education.

"The key is to keep company only with people who uplift you, whose presence calls forth your best."
- Epictetus
Born into slavery in Rome, Epictetus ended up in Greece, where he was freed and became a Stoic philosopher and teacher.

Sometimes, when I find a particular passage that strikes me, I'll go back later and re-read it out loud to myself. A good writer can make the words sing. There is a rhythm, a tempo in good writing. Language, in the hands of an author, can become music in itself.
I like to sing along.

... and another thing -
With a physical book, no one else knows what you are reading. Unless you want them to.

I read with intention.
That intention can be to learn something. It can be simple entertainment. It can be a discovery of new worlds, or a new understanding of old ones. To become aware of differences, or to glimpse commonalities. To reveal who I am, or to show me who I can become.

Oh, and one other advantage of physical books:
If and when a powerful solar event hits Earth head-on, it will fry anything electronic. Your kindle will literally be toast.

I'll be happy to lend you a book from my private library in that event. 📖 🧓
Peace.

Almost finished ... it's a re-read. Reading it again takes me back into the story, but also back into the memory of reading it before. I first read it as a teenager and it left an impression. Now I feel some of the same emotions, and others that have been tempered with experience.

My current TBR stack. A little light reading.
Where should I start?
All purchased from indie bookstores, of course.

#WomensHistoryMonth - Day 6: "Here Is My Body" by Booth Mooney (1952)
Behind the lurid GGA cover, and buried in the subtext of this otherwise unremarkable novel is a revealing glimpse of American morality and mores in the post-war era.
This was a popular sub-genre in the 50s.

#WomensHistoryMonth - Day 5: "Higher Consciousness Through Happy Homemaking" by Bea Happy (2004)

I read enough to determine this wasn't satire, but rather an unwitting look at the social and cultural pressures that allot the role of "homemaker" to women in our society.

#WomensHistoryMonth - Day 4: "Heloise's Housekeeping Hints" by Heloise Cruse (1965)
The cover says it all.

This series of WHM posts look at women's roles as defined by social "norms" and American culture over time, and how women re-shaped them over time.
As told by the book.

#WomensHistoryMonth - Day 3: "Hammerfall" by C.J. Cherryh (2001)
She appended the "h" to her real name because her editor thought "Cherry" sounded like a romance writer. She went by C. J. to hide that she was female in a typically male genre.
In the footsteps of "George Sand".
