The eternal struggle
Something to look forward to!
It's amusing how important the Headline of the Year contest has become to my internal sense of the course of the year.

I mean, it's not a particularly big part, to be fair, but the fact that it's more than none at all is quite fun.

Danielle Smith: "I hope people today feel a lot more confident that Canada works than they did a couple of days ago."
UCP convention crowd: LOUD BOOS
Danielle Smith tried to sell her federal-Alberta energy deal to the UCP convention crowd: tepid applause.
She told them that this proved Canada can work well for Alberta’s interests: loud boos.

This ain’t a base that wants Smith to work with a Liberal PM on a better industrial carbon tax.

Just wanna say that this has been said to me multiple times in my life, by people who “mean well”.

From this adoptee:

STOP IT. STOP ASKING THAT QUESTION.
“would you prefer to have been aborted?”

Do you mean would i prefer a world in which women have control over their bodies? 🥚
So my adoptive mom threw the"well you know, your mom could've aborted you" at me today because she's tired of my "attitude". I told her "I am pro abortion to the point of being fine with having never existed." That pulled her up short. I don't play this game. With anyone. 🥚

ChatGPT’s signature writing style is everywhere now, and I hate it. It reminds me of when we tried mixing all the beverages at the soda fountain in middle school. We didn’t actually create the perfect drink, we just made a cloying monstrosity that lost everything good about its constituent parts.

refusing to debate someone, online or irl, about a topic of such moral urgency to you that you cannot perform emotional dissociation and treat it like an intellectual puzzle, is not being “closed-minded,” it just might be saving your psyche and your health for more constructive pursuits.

montreal now has a 119-kilometre metro system with 87 stations, by far the largest in canada!

Note to self: put together a thread of things the New York Times says that Canadians are saying that Canadians are definitely not saying.
The World Series was played outside the U.S. for the first time in 32 years this October, when the Toronto Blue Jays united fans across Canada as the country’s only MLB team. The team even became known as the “Glue Jays” before the Los Angeles Dodgers ended their thrilling postseason run.
Canadians Mourn a Loss by Underdogs Who Brought a Nation Together
The Blue Jays, Canada’s only M.L.B. team, were a salve for a country hit by President Trump’s threats and tariffs. Then the Dodgers ended their thrilling postseason run.

Sentences like this are why we read John:

“Imagining that Canada’s actions are anything other than a secondary input into the pudding that sits between the ears of the president is something closer to vanity than analysis.”

Where can we find updated/live council voting records? Trying to navigate to specific results in the city of Ottawa's agendas and minutes web portal is an exercise in frustration 😵‍💫
Today over half of #ottcity councillors present at Council wanted to debate the timing of the Lansdowne report. A project of this size and complexity should be given more than nine days for councillors and the public to prepare.

We can presume this is part of what Dr Oz meant today when he said "under-babied" -- there aren't enough babies being relinquished for adoption, so limited supply vs high demand means the big expenses of adoption are in the way of families getting all the children they want 🥚
October 16, 2025 at 9:53 PM
It was said explicitly in the US supreme court Dobbs ruling (by which Roe v Wade was overturned), there's not enough "domestic supply of infants" – so, restrict abortion access to force more births. They've gotta increase baby supply to reduce baby price, aka adoption! 🥚
Dr Oz: "Turns out that about 1/3 families don't have the number of babies they desire. They're under-babied. So this president committed to address that during the campaign and he's delivering on that today."

To be clear, there is never a time when condemning political violence is wrong. But Democrats need to choose their words today, under these circumstances, very carefully. In the clip below, Pritzker does just that: He condemns the shooting, he offers condolences, then he says this.
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) on the shooting of Charlie Kirk:

"Political violence, unfortunately, has ramped up in this country ... I think there are people who are fomenting it in this country. I think the president's rhetoric often foments it."

Acts of political violence aren’t acceptable. Non-political school shootings aren’t acceptable. Sacking the legislature isn’t acceptable. Military occupation of peaceful American cities isn’t acceptable. Abductions conducted in courthouse hallways by masked agents of the state aren’t acceptable.
