I didn’t vote for Schiff in the primary and knew he was not progressive, but his votes now are cowardly and still disappointing—particularly for someone who talked such a big game during the 1st trump admin
Democratic Senators voting in favor: Baldwin, Bennet, Booker, Cortez-Masto, Durbin, Fetterman, Gallego, Hassan, Henrich, Hickenlooper, Klobuchar, Ossoff, Peters, Rosen, Schiff, Shaheen, Slotkin, Warnock, and Welch.

Interesting to read thoughts on liberty from >50 years ago - lots of insights on how discourse has changed. Many debates, like the relationship between freedom from interference and material conditions can fall out of fashion without ever being resolved. cactus.utahtech.edu/green/B_Read...

Sad to hear of the death of UCLA professor Donald Shoup, who was considered the preeminent scholar of how parking mandates affected housing costs and the look and feel of cities. Was a pleasure to interview him for our old podcast www.latimes.com/homeless-hou...
'Gimme Shelter': How parking lots explain California's housing crisis
A new California law eliminates minimum parking requirements for housing near mass transit. Why one parking guru says it'll be a boon for home building.

The Census Bureau's TIGER shapefiles are down. So much for making progress on my papers today...

Guess even the outlines of counties, shapes of rivers and lakes, etc are now considered "woke"?

Wrote about how this administration is weaponizing transportation in service of nightmare shit that has no business influencing transportation policy, but more specifically, wtf was up with that line about giving more money to states with more babies
Why Trump's DOT is Promising More Money to States With Higher Birth Rates — Streetsblog USA
Supporting American families in the transportation realm doesn't mean giving low-population red states more money for highways — even if a new DOT memo suggests that's exactly what they'll do.

24 Democratic senators voted for the new DOT secretary, who signed this, two days ago
Wild prioritization on the part of the DOT, starting with the focus on high-marriage and high-birth-rate areas. Like, what?

Also, absolutely bizarre for the DOT to claim it's focusing on user-pay models when the Trump admin right now is talking about trying to kill NYC congestion pricing.

Something to tell your offline normie friends with hiring power: You don’t need a DEI office to hire people of color. This is a great time to double down on (or start) inclusive hiring practices. Diversify your candidate pool by being proactive about where your job listings are posted.

2025 is when vision zero was supposed to be achieved in City of LA
Calendar year 2024 is the second year in a row that traffic deaths exceeded murders in LA City. Traffic deaths dropped slightly in 2024, tho it's 3 consecutive years over 300 people killed in traffic. xtown.la/2025/01/27/t...
Traffic deaths in L.A. exceed murder total for second consecutive year
Auto fatalities, like homicides, decline; pedestrian-vehicle collisions remain perilously high…

I’m hopeful for the future when I think about where I am today compared to 8 yrs ago. I was in a consulting job that actively minimized legal accountability for corporate failure to comply with employment law! I felt hopeless about making the world a better place.

Since I'm seeing it everywhere:

I worked in LA City Hall when the budget passed. Our office voted No. But the idea that LAFD was "defunded" to increase the LAPD budget is not accurate. Both got increases due to salary hikes. LAFD's deal just happened after the budget process -- LAPD's was before.
