It’s rare that I’ve enjoyed myself this much with a movie I should’ve logically hated. From a filmmaking perspective, it’s a mess… but it was just unafraid to let its freak flag fly and adapt the games in all their ridiculous glory, and for that, I can respect it.

Having seen several of Paul W. S. Anderson's movies, I'd argue that Paul Thomas Anderson could probably shoot better action scenes, in fact. Because I find Paul W. S. to be one of the worst action filmmakers of his time. It's telling that his best movie was pure horror rather than action.
