Last Friday: Well, I cleaned up that MS good! fixed the XXX FIX THIS, fixed the dates, sorted the travel, the days of the week, the times of day, and even the smoking. Smooth.

That's me caught up on reviews, except for the five (FIVE) books I DNFd in the past two weeks. (One romance where the Edwardian British heroine was an intolerably modern American, one very stupid thriller, one tonally bizarre fantasy, and two pointless non-fictions clearly bought on premise alone.)

I read Strange New World (Dr. Greta Helsing, #4) by Vivian Shaw
K.J. Charles's review of Strange New World (Dr. Greta Helsing, #4)
I didn't realise there was to be a fourth in this series after the eschatological climax of the last one. I decided to do a series reread, which I enjoyed a lot--it's a lovely world and the characters...

I read Magically Generated by Jackie Lau
K.J. Charles's review of Magically Generated
A slightly whimsical romance with a grumpy heroine (Jackie Lau is the queen of the grump) and a sunny hero with a magical talent for shaping snow. The silly premise is followed through seriously, as i...

K.J. Charles's review of Testimony of Mute Things (Penric and Desdemona #15)
I glommed this entire novella sequence in a few days earlier this autumn. I glommed this. I will glom anything Bujold wishes to write in this series. That is all. (Please do not recommend that I sho...

I read Dope Girls: The Birth of the British Drug Underground by Marek Kohn
K.J. Charles's review of Dope Girls
Very readable social history covering drug use in the UK, the overreaching powers of DORA and criminalisation, and some of the key scandals that shaped opinion. Quite short, snappily written, interest...

K.J. Charles's review of By Marsh and by Moor (Marsh and Moor, #1)

We watched the new Naked Gun movie last night and if you like the original Airplane! and jokes of incredible density in every sense, you will love this. Liam Neeson plays it as straight as required and there are some magnificently stupid gags.

I have been enjoying a couple of scary podcasts (Lovecraft Investigations and Magnus Archives) but reflecting somewhat resentfully that it would be nice if I could call on atmospheric background music at will.

So I sent the Big Book to the editor today. More scary than usual because not my home genre, but I am cautiously confident.

Me: I need to rename a character. Let me just look through my Kelly's Directory for some good-sounding plausible period surnames.
Directory: How about Lancelot and Lazarus Fletcher, for brothers?
Me: Don't be silly.
Directory: Tax? Evill? Flux?
Me: Not helping.
Directory: Got it. De Worms.
