DNS request traffic to @cloudflare.social 1.1.1.1 resolver has also seen a significant increase, with growth starting on 17-Jan and exceeding pre-shutdown levels the next day. TXT record queries have grown to be the majority of the request traffic.

I think it's ok to be thankful for one less psychotic nazi in the world. Even if they were a nice little boy once.

Honestly Union Station just isn't that nice. Passengers better off not going there.

I stopped reading here. Twenty years of living in central Wellington and I've never experienced a sewage leak. Fresh water, yes. This? No.

I'm sure some tower climbers are pretty well ionised by now.

For those asking for more practical steps, here's some of the tools and platforms we use at Bellingcat. The AutoArchiver allows online media to be collected and automatically archived, allowing centralised collection of sources

And ai-generated CSAM on X is a clear example of how a "free global internet and a decentralized system of digital governance and infrastructure" fails when faced with amoral corporations. Sorry but digital sovereignty isn't a binary issue nor is it explicitly a tool of repression.

Any kind of device meant to switch mains power can be weaponised. Turn the relay on and off fast enough and you can start a fire. I'm cautious about smart devices in general but when it comes to switching power the only ones I use are ones where I write and/or upload the code.

I've been heartened to see the new private sector entities getting involved in pv generation. The market is working, albeit slowly.

I have the data for New Zealand that could show power use with high accuracy, and so much of that power use is there to support streaming over 4G/5G.
January 15, 2026 at 9:25 PM
My deep knowledge on the topic is all based on my part of the world, but here our power consumption is mainly urban/suburban. Rural/remote coverage sites covering the largest area use the least gross power and by far the least power per km2.
January 15, 2026 at 9:22 PM
Anyway your claim "the energy consumption... increases proportional with the number of sites and not with the amount of data used" is not accurate. 4G coverage over an area can be done at 500W while high-volume data over the same area might require 3.5kW today. And power use is going up.
January 15, 2026 at 6:53 PM
In general adding more spectrum in the same band leads to a lower energy cost per bit. A single standalone 100 MHz 5G channel will have a far better energy efficiency than NSA aggregated 20 MHz 4G + 80 MHz 5G.
January 15, 2026 at 6:42 PM
When it comes to mobile data energy consumption, it's not just the size of the coverage area that has an influence, but the order of MIMO, which is determined by spectrum availability and throughput required. Urban 32x32 cells use far more power than suburban 4x4 for the same coverage area.

This turned out amazingly good btw. Based on www.seriouseats.com/carne-adovad... but used venison. Whole orange (peel removed before I blended the sauce) substituted for oj concentrate. Dried Chipotles instead of cans. And added a couple of other types of Mexican chilies beyond the ancho & pasilla.
Carne Adovada (New Mexico-Style Pork With Red Chiles) Recipe
Similar to chile con carne but made with pork, carne adovada is a New Mexico dish offering perfectly tender chunks of pork shoulder braised in a base made of an assortment of chiles.

I can see how we got here though. That Vic Uni Masters I finished 9/11 papers for was full of average quality profs who really wanted to read a lot of words. Minimum word counts, regardless of actual content.

Need a one-click "Google Translate" like option on my browser that de-wordifies. A "cut-the-bullshit" button. Does it exist?

Left it in the oven at 150C with a five hour timer & woke to this. And a very good smelling house.
