That’s a false choice. The victims of crimes are mostly vulnerable: poor, black or brown, and/or female. Your ideas would leave them with little recourse. Perpetrators would be worse off, too, unless you think being dead is dandy.

But with high-tech data gathering, this Trump regime won’t require large numbers of collaborators and informants. They can leverage a small number of active informants and merge the data gleaned from them with the data from tech companies, including (and especially) Palantir.

A major difference is that the Stasi, and the Gestapo before it, needed active collaborators. That’s no longer true in our high-tech age.

This matters because opposition to Trump‘s authoritarianism is sequestered in parts of the citizenry where there aren’t so many eager collaborators.
