people shouldn't have to beg and grovel for food and shelter! this should not be a thing people debate!

This was like Christmas to me, I bought this abandoned house *two days* after the last collection event and have been sitting on it since then.

Total defiance of both common sense and the constant smugness about having a high-trust society. You've had a hundred years to outgrow being a bunch of stingy fucking peasants, make some FUCKING policy about it.

People here use USB-powered hand/foot warmers and heated battery-powered vests to survive waiting at the bus stop here in winter. These people can't drive, they have no climate control option. /Where is the electrical outlet for them/.

On the one hand you have Nanto City doing there OH PLEASE PLEASE COME DO BIKE TOURISM WE HAVE SO MANY RENTAL E-BIKES PLZ COME.

What happens when your phone dies and you can't get GPS? There's no public charging stations. You can't charge off the bike.

Am I shoplifting the HVAC when I hang out in an air-conditioned store???

Public libraries don't let you use their outlets. Neither do train stations. Neither do most conbinis outside Tokyo. Neither do any chain restaurants that, again, allow charging in Tokyo/Tokai.

I'd been futzing around with moving my 住民票 because Tokai is easier for bureaucratic shit but I'm going to do it Monday because I NEED to complain to someone at City Hall about this shit. It's classist and evil.

No I just bowed and apologized a lot and explained it was an emergency and they called me some slurs and said I have bad morals and then went away.

--but I assume the fascist Meiji government didn't want people asserting rights to property/privacy, which is why they made a special 'intangibles' exception for electricity.
November 14, 2025 at 5:59 AM
Yeah these people CALLED THE COPS on me so I was looking up the legal precedent and it is so obviously baseless classist horseshit left over from the feudal era when electricity was for the ~elite~. The kind of cases where they really throw the book at people ought to be punished as TRESSPASSING--

It's THEFT-theft too, a year in prison or up to like $3k equivalent in fines.
November 14, 2025 at 5:51 AM
At less than 25 cents for 6Kw/h it doesn't make sense to me in places that are public or in businesses where you are already consuming an electric utility while being there. It's literally a Meiji-period dogshit law. Otherwise enjoying the airconditioning or heat would be "stealing".
November 14, 2025 at 5:50 AM
The thing about outlets seems especially batshit to me because if it's REALLY a problem that people aren't paying for electricity you could just! Put an honesty box! We already do that!
November 14, 2025 at 5:31 AM
This is apparently also the legal logic by which Kansai Electric Power, which owns the generator dams on the Shogawa, can prevent me from installing a small turbine on my own property. They "own" the potential electricity of the whole watershed. I'd be ~stealing~.

Over the pass and through the mysteriously warm tunnel, looking towards Noto.

This isn't even everything that was left in the shed, but at least the nitrogen I can use to make compost, and I don't think volcanic ash expires.

The combined miasma smells exactly like my grandma's potting shed in Florida.
