Bookish friends are great because you can be all "read this, it will absolutely crush your soul and tear your beating heart into a million little pieces and you will literally never recover from it" and they'll be like omg yaaaasssss

As part of my craft review, here's my thoughts on Matt Bell's Refuse to Be Done. Spoiler: I loved it.

Bristol BookFest wasn’t unlike a protest with Fahrenheit 451. There were robots, Kelly Link, a fabulous mock censorship trial, and so many smart conversations about Bradbury and censorship. Thanks for all the light.

Just heard that Jules Feiffer died recently. The Phantom Tollbooth was THE book that got me into books, and a big part of that was Feiffer's sketches. It served as a kind of book bridge, showing me how to use my imagination. That book was magic for me. Still is. Thanks, Jules Feiffer.

I wrote a lil post about Le Guin's Steering the Craft and my goal to work through writing craft books each morning this year.

Le Guin’s Steering the Craft
I'm working through writing craft books each morning this year, and first up was Le Guin's Steering the Craft. I found the exercises on POV invaluable and really appreciated that she didn't wave any f...

Another highlight of my day was the Moby Dick book arts exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum. My favorite was this binding by Susan and Chaim Ebanks.

I write down gnawing night lines when they come, but this MADE NO SENSE: "Top 10 places of earth tourism next X years. Will have water adventure that changes seasonally. Insurance policy. Excellent tourism. Floods have to hold breath." But it's proof it insisted on being written at 3 a.m.

Issue #16 of Bone Parade is ready to read! These stories are too fabulous to summarize in 300 characters. Go read them and find out for yourself!

Just saw on a non-paying lit mag's submission guidelines that they only respond to submissions they're accepting. What? Really? This is a thing? Tsk tsk. And they're only on their second issue. As someone in the lit mag trenches, I know the struggle, and that ain't right. Respect your submitters.

I was so into the #Nebulas2024 "Older Heroes and Protagonists" panel today. One of my favorite stories featuring an older protagonist is Leonora Carrington's The Hearing Trumpet. Do you have a favorite story featuring an older protagonist? Do any of your stories have an older protagonist?

Really enjoyed the #Nebulas2024 panels I attended today! I'm super happy to be attending the virtual conference this year. If you have a favorite panel that I need to make time for, please let me know!

Issue 14 features five fabulous stories: sound killing forests, the magic of new life, partnerships of stone and water, a charming Nordic fairy tale, and a banished human who dreams of becoming an AI. This issue is SO SO GOOD. Give it a read!

If you’re a New Year’s goals/ resolutions/fresh slate/ self improvement / planner person, I’d love to hear how you tackle that if you’ve found success and any shareable things you aim to work on next year.

My partner put his Advent calendar, with every window open, in the garbage last night, so Merry Christmas.

Congrats to all the folks who trudged through NaNo this year, whether you made it to 50k or not! If you made time for your writing, that's a win!
December 2, 2023 at 4:28 AM
Another NaNo in the books. I wrote 50k of short stories again. My goal is to keep the habit going! I'm committed to writing 250 words a day. As a fiction editor and book coach, I struggle to find time for my own work. My favorite thing about NaNo is that it forces me to prioritize my own craft!

You know how it goes: you're writing a poem & you need to google "which animal is the most disco" so you learn about the existence of disco clams—who apparently spray mucus to ward off predators. Which is when you realize this poem is not going to end up anywhere close to where you started.

Well, we're 1/3 of the way through #NaNoWriMo already—how goes it NaNo folks? I'm happy to be on track with a humble 17,569 words. I'm writing short stories again this year, and happened upon a charming moral philosophy professor last night that wants to keep telling his story, so I'm indulging him.

Also, #NaNoWriMo is going well. Word count is on track. I’d love to hear how everyone is doing. I’ve already had two brutal days, which is probably a bad sign? So far, the most promising stories involved a fireproof house, a cat coughing up worlds, memory simulation addiction, and towing a giant.

I just saw The Wall/Die Wand, a film from 2012, and it was full of such beautiful, perfect writing, but it was also soul crushing, and now I am completely broken.

Aaaaaand, we’re off! Happy writing to everyone participating in NaNoWriMo! First day/story down and word count met. Tell me what you’re writing—I’d love to hear about it!
