You are a criminal/artist in a cyberpunk and/or fantasy world with intricate fancy social codes. As a ner-do-well you have never needed your own symbol to stamp in wax for your letters (you just used your thumb) But, exciting new opportunities have you moving up in the world rapidly... suddenly […]

Please entertain my idea for a band playing straight middle-of-the-road soft rock who only perform at experimental music festivals.

Their name: The Control Group.

(Extracted to my blog because I’m rather proud of it and no-one seemed to notice my brilliance.)

“Immense world” is a remarkable book written with a lot of science but also sensitivity. I try to get everyone to read it. It totally changed the way that I think about how animals think.

The audiobook is great. With non-fiction sometimes audiobooks don't work, but this one is worth listening […]

What do you mean you don't obsessively count the number of chocolates in a tub of Celebrations every year and put the results into an Excel spreadsheet!?

Anyway, the 2025 results are in:

Galaxy x5
Galaxy Caramel x5
Maltesers x5
Mars x9
Milky Way x9
Snickers […]

Why has this not happened: a gameshow where 10 audiophiles have to tell the difference between expensive £1k - £10k audiophile gear and a £300 setup.

I would watch the SHIT out of that.

This makes me realise that it's about 4 months too late to photograph the sun reflecting off the windows of the university sports centre and creating a halo around the toilet roll holder of the bathroom in the house we're moving out of.

My thoughts on social media bans everywhere is that if you're taking digital connections away from teens, you better make sure they have third spaces for physical connection, and give them options for transport that is not "parents drive us around" otherwise all you're creating is isolation.
And […]

It seems to me that the very thing the Supreme Court DID NOT DO when it ruled on the meaning of ‘sex’ for the purposes of the Equality Act back in April was to offer any “Much needed clarity” as claimed by Keir Starmer. In fact what they achieved was to create total chaos for everyone — not […]

For the last few years I've been running a proxy of the BBC News RSS feeds (https://bbc-feeds.danq.dev) that strips out duplicate content, non-news content, and (optionally) sports news.

This weekend, for the first time, somebody asked if it could produce an edition that included only the […]

No #fridgesofsellyoak calendar this year - I've been far too busy moving house to roam the streets collecting photos of abandoned fridges.

But #airventcalendar2025 seems like a fitting substitute.

Ok, I gave up on The Ministry of Time, but did finish “They Were Her Property,” a fantastic if hard book to read. I’ve always loved the genre of “if we look at history looking for women, turns out we find them everywhere, doing significant things!” This book is that, except the significant thing […]

2. step stool (because i am short)
