It reminds me of this poster that I got with a zine I once bought: No future without art, a manifesto.
NO FUTURE WITHOUT ART A MANIFESTO (not complete due to character limitations) For a long and trying century, We the People have sufered at the hands of increasingly valueles, commercial, and oppressive "art." We have become complacent. We have turned Our backs on beauty. We have jailed the old masters, stomped out the embers of genius, and become slaves to the tidal pull of five minute fashions. WE HAVE BECOME CULTURALLY BANKRUPT. WE HAVE REACHED STATE OF ART THAT IS NO LONGER TOLERABLE. Now We must recognize and embrace the truth for what it is: the multi-million dollar atrocities with which We have decorated Our cities and filled Our institutions is not art. Art that is manufactured is not art. Art that is for the elite few is not art. Art that requires explanation is not art. Art that is inaccessible is not art.

The prefaces of 100 Queer Poems are absolutely wonderfilled. This is by co-editor Andrew McMillan.
The only reason I write poetry is because I love to read it. Every time I turn a page of this anthology I'm sixteen again, back in my childhood bedroom, reading with excitement work that moved and inspired me. Maybe there's someone in your life who has iust come out, maybe there's someone in your life who is struggling, maybe there's someone in your life for whom the language we currently have isn't adequate to describe who they are. Say you go and knock on their door, say you hand them a copy of this anthology. Say these poems put their arms around them, these poems open the curtains and point them towards places they haven't yet imagined. Say these poems give them pleasure. Say these poems give them hope. Say they find a piece of scrap paper and begin to write their own .

Reading Priya Chatterjee's chapter, Transforming Pedagogies: Imagining Internationalist/Feminist/Antiracist Literacies, from the collected volume, Activist Scholarship, published in 2009. These "shutdowns," as Chatterjee describes them, are so common among HK undergrads.
The piece is short, not an academic essay, and I have saved the last fifteen minutes of class discussion for it. When I ask them for their thoughts on the piece, whether they have any questions and curiosities, I am met with absolute silence. As I probe the silence, they tell me that they have not read the piece. Not one student. I am suddenly struck by a deep sense of both irony and despair. Here was the first time I had ever systematically tried to bring my “other world” into the U.S. classroom, and it is the one time that I simply cannot elicit a discussion with my students. I am dumbstruck, struck dumb. I tell them that I just can’t lecture on this and stop the class early. I tell them that the next class we will be studying indigenous women’s organizing in Guatemala and Chiapas before moving into a discussion of women’s mobilizing in Argentina. Some of the students who are Latino/as light up with interest.

now do I give in to the need of taking a "small" to drop by my local queer bookstore, drink a coffee and work on a local names, not numbers embroidery project in solidarity with Palestine, or do I keep working from home?
fyi: that small break will probably be the end of my working day.

TL;DR: I would love to continue working in academia. I'd love to work more on pedagogy. I'd love to learn about alternative systems of learning and sharing, teaching and listening. And my students were really sweet this term.

Alienation. To no surprise. Towards a desire for change, gratitude and hope, maybe. The unease will remain. I guess that confirms it.
You create from alienation. There is a distance not only between yourself and others, but between yourself and what you are expected to be, yourself and your own humanity. Your honest self feels too divorced from what it should be for it to have any place among everyone else. Your art is an expression of your estrangement from normalcy and other's expectations. It is strange and shocking because you feel that is what you are when you are not pretending to be otherwise. You do not create things to be pretty or pleasing to others, but to be raw and confusing. You have always felt different, so you want to create things that are remarkably different from the norm. It is an expression of your own strangeness, which seems to have no place but in your art. Your work is a sanctuary for everything that alienates you from the world at large.
