We had a walk round and chat with one of the UoR Community Festival organisers and are so excited by what they've got running this year at the festival! It's incredible to get to be part of community events like this!

CONSULTATION The proposal is not perfect (fees could be higher, car size & weight could be included as a factor,...) but we think it's an important first step to push back on the scourge of motonormativity.

Given the limited resources this kind of disproportionate policing is a dereliction of duty. 2023 saw 493 pedestrians & cyclist fatalities, none of which involved an e-scooter.

There’s new more secure bike parking appearing in #rdg from @readingcouncil.bsky.social a unexpected benefit is that they make your bike more stable when it’s locked. Making getting a child on and off a bike seat much easier! We’ll share some pictures later.

Thanks to everyone who came today, Santa was delighted to be able to give some gifts out to all your awesome little cyclists.

Christmas 2024 ride in Reading - Kidical Mass Reading

If you were out today in #rdg and saw us and happened to take any photos would you mind sharing? I saw a few people take some photos of Santa on his triplet (reliable transport for when the sleigh is too wide for busy roads 😉 ) and be great to see the ride from a different perspective. #kidicalmass

Brilliant ride with some lovely kids. And B did his first ride on a pedal bike! And Santa came, should probably have led with that.

This should be the norm not the car ridden rat race we see in Britain.
Outside this primary school in Utrecht cars are restricted and there is a playground, cycle parking, greenery and seating in the square outside. Schools will have young children and parents coming and going every day so need safe, healthy streets where kids can play and parents can meet

Children don’t play out anymore says Boris Johnson, he blames the church and the risk of paedophiles… we think this devastating impact on our children is in part due to #cars taking over the streets. #playstreets and #kidicalmass rides help to reclaim them for a short time. But our kids deserve more
“Children don’t play out anymore” says ex-PM who, during covid, stopped children from playing outside whilst encouraging adults to go to pubs. Somewhere in this latest weird rant there’s a nugget of truth about children’s health - but let’s talk about the issue seriously.

‘Strikingly, people who cycled on a daily basis had 84% lower carbon emissions from all their daily travel than those who didn’t.’

Riding bikes is 10X more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities. And that’s just the climate emissions. Doesn’t include the massive public & personal cost, the air & noise pollution, the huge space difference, etc… @theconversation.bsky.social

Cycling is ten times more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities
Active travel can help tackle the climate crisis earlier than electric vehicles – even if you swap the car for a bike for just one trip a day.

We’re sorry for mentioning the
C word so early, but Santa Claus is paying #kidicalmass #rdg a very early visit. I’m informed that the big man is embracing #activetravel with bike related gifts for all the children.

This shouldn’t be our reality, we deserve safer
Very important line here from Transport Secretary Louise Haigh on road safety:

"We treat road safety in a way as if it is somehow a natural accident. If the number of people being killed or seriously injured on our roads, were being killed in any other way, we'd be treating it as a pandemic."

Having safe routes enables our children to have freedom and practice their skills. Thanks to UoR for such a great campus. Helping all ages learn.

Brilliant video from Clean Air Matters on why #cleanair matters and what you can do. Walking and cycling is obviously there but if you need to drive why not share a journey with a friend?

Just 58% of UK cyclists felt that our cycle lanes are well maintained compared to an avg of 75% for other surveyed nations.

According to ACO pedalling towards better cycle lanes - keeping Britain on the bike.

This! Blaming people for questionable behaviour because the system they exist in forces it helps no one.
Absolutely! I am shocked by how many apparently radical activists think it's fine to bring the full weight of our policing and legal systems down on precarious workers fulfilling the whims of middle class consumers, for poverty wages.

Police and regulate the delivery companies.
The solution to delivery riders riding illegal ebikes or riding recklessly isn't punitive, it's addressing WHY they're doing it - unliveable pay and conditions by delivery companies.
It's disgusting that so many leftists and urbanists can't wait to throw them under the bus.

I said mid November so don’t worry if you haven’t given your details yet we kept some back.

Thanks again to everyone coming together to help our wider community.
