Anyway ! One year later, we have a 3D game with puzzles coming about, characters, a story, a lore that I really like (although it still a draft). I made contact with friends and artists to help me (payed of course !!) and I'm happy to be getting closer to a first demo every day.

But also, my very first tests for gameplay were in 2D. I started designing some tilesets, and objects in pixel art, then incorporated some gameplay elements, borrowing some sprites from a little rpg of the snes (that I'm sure nobody will recognize).

Funnily enough, the first thing I worked on was a dialogue system ! I knew I wanted to do a puzzle game with sci-hi/horror elements. And I wanted to have something story driven, where there was some dialogue with no branching.

I loved the dialogue system of Disco Elysium and started copying it.

Spent 1 hour trying to play with Godot's decal nodes, but in the end I was not not satisfied with the results and I had to "simply" use textured planes. Maybe it's because of my textures ?

Anyway, here's some blood from the first in-game victim in Khonsu Station.

Made a full playthrough chapter 1.
Now it's "Fix all the warnings and errors time". Nothing is crashing, which is a good sign, but still a lot of residual problems !

AI decided the shortest way to the player was getting out of the map and entering from the other side ...

Trying to make vines for a nice "one time" scene. Turns out geometry nodes are really helpful, but I'm not sure this will look really great in game. Might need additional tuning, but we'll see.

Working on telegraphing for NPC actions. Not there yet, but a huge improvement over the last iteration with big ugly arrows.

The end result might require a mix of 3D and 2D elements for better readability.

Working on world-building is long and tedious, but gratifying. Slowly populating your environment to make them lively is something I really enjoy.

The layout of all 10 first levels is finished.
These will serve as the tutorial of the game, and introduction to the core mechanics, as well as a mood setter for the whole game !
