I genuinely cannot believe how many Democrats are spending their energy on destroying Mamdani when the GOP is trying to turn ICE into a full on secret police by drastically raising their budget

One of the benefits of reading a lot of history is that you realize how many people who were ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN they were doing a lot of good were, in fact, doing a lot of harm.

Certainty is a hell of a drug. Certainty combined with fame/power is especially dangerous.

When Trump and Musk tout how much money they're saving by gutting cancer research and Social Security services, know this:

Their IRS cuts will cost $500 billion in tax revenue just this year. That's more than half the Defense budget.

None of their destruction is actually about saving money.

This will directly cause hundreds of thousands of new and needless deaths from tuberculosis every year, and reverse decades of progress in fighting our deadliest infection. I'm just devastated.
Tuberculosis, the deadliest infectious disease on the planet, kills more than 1.25M people a year. New infections are expected to surge by 30% as a result of closing USAID, a memo says. The increase will inevitably lead to cases in the U.S.
Internal Memos: Senior USAID Leaders Warned Trump Appointees of Hundreds of Thousands of Deaths From Closing Agency
One million children will go untreated for severe malnutrition, up to 166,000 people will die from malaria and 200,000 more children will be paralyzed by polio over the next decade, the memos…

The coolest thing I’ve seen today is that a bunch of volunteer public health professionals and developers have restored the CDC website from before January 20th 2025.

This differs from an archive in that they want to rebuild the links between pages and replicate the full website.

A little break from *gestures to everything*

I'm finding it increasingly troubling that I will be advertised a clothing item or outfit and think "that's cute, does it come in my size" ...only to click on it and learn it is for toddlers.

Of the 4000 researchers at NIH, only 20% are tenured. They’re going to fire all the rest as their contracts come up for renewal, absolutely decimating research at the NIH. This is catastrophic, not just for Americans, but for the whole world.

We have to do three things right now, 1) block bad Trump admin actions, 2) build an opposition party that will win elections, 3) help people who need it. If an activism idea doesn’t do one of those, it’s not a good one.
