The theme over the last month in many conversations about fascism: you never know when the new, terrifying rule (whatever it is, regardless of its legitimacy) is actually going to be applied.
It might be helpful to contextualize the Brazilian judicial branch’s reaction to Bolsonaro. Much of it has to do with memories of the military dictatorship. It only ended 40 years ago…

Today is Transgender Day or Remembrance. I know everything is terrible, but Liniker won 3 more Latin Grammys last week (now she has 4).

Liniker is from Brazil, the country with the dubious distinction of having the most reasons to grieve trans people.

The UK is considering a policy that would effectively segregate trans people from society. It would bar trans people from "single sex spaces" even when they use the facility of their sex assigned at birth.

This is a full on policy of segregation without even the benefit of separate facilities.

Sure seems like there’s a fight happening inside the state department.
Update: The State Department has once again changed the language back to saying transgender people's passports will be valid "until they are invalidated pursuant to federal regulations."

Like I was saying yesterday:

Meanwhile, nobody is saying, “you know what? I think we gave powerful men too much leeway and now we have a pedophilia ring”

There are no consequences when the harms are right there in front of us.

Most NYT articles I read about why different groups are losing their rights at a fast clip (trans people, Black people, immigrants), the regular refrain is always “things went too far.”

Can anybody pinpoint what that is? Nearly every possible answer for this wilts under just the slightest scrutiny

Yet another example of bureaucratic whiplash over our right to keep the passports we have. I’m pretty sure the update from 3 days ago was some sort of trial balloon to see if they could get away with it.
1. In a major update, the Trump administration has reversed course publicly, and now says "all passports" will remain valid until they expire for transgender people.

This comes after many outlets reported a message that indicated passports could be revoked.

The tendency among those of us with tenure is to worry about upsetting colleagues, to just keep our heads down and do our research. But here's the thing: many of these revelations come from scholars of color, disabled scholars, and JUNIOR scholars. We owe it to them to share some of that risk.

If they are going to say that the issue is queer people rather than pedophiles, I sure hope the American people reject this. With every fiber of my being. If they don’t, I weep for the future.
