Just finished this account of the Munich tragedy and it’s aftermath, as the dead are buried, the survivors inch towards recovery and a club begins to be rebuilt. David Peace again delivers to his own high standard embroidering what is known with sensitively imagined fictionalisation #DavidPeace

A brave novel (2020) centring on two bright Glasgow lads. O’Hagan presents the preoccupations and Indy soundtrack of an early 1980s youth with a rite of passage weekend. The second part picks up this enduring friendship as the end of a life rushes in. Profound, well-crafted and much to reflect on.

Grabbed this from the library last week as I I like Coe and wasn’t sure if I read it. I was half right- I’d listened to it on audible. There’s a great chapter midway, when his characters are described watching and interacting with the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony as it goes out live. #jonathancoe

Last week, my local pub, The Pelton Arms in East Greenwich was painted black and briefly renamed The Extinction Arms as part of a campaign to raise awareness of the possibility that, the way things are going, pubs like this will not exist by 2035. The cleaner’s cat stars x.com/simplybusine...

‘The Illuminations’ explores big issues to do with memory, the loss of it and war zone trauma as they are imagined to affect two main and a small number of other characters. A tale told, with great skill by Andrew O’Hagan, which could make an interesting small film.

My next read. Andrew O’Hagan’s ‘The Illuminations’ (2015). I was attracted to it when I read that one of the protagonists was a documentary photographer. Once again, I’ll report back here about whether I liked and would recommend it.

Wet day at Goodison. The Blues were unable to overcome a Brentford side down to 10 men after a red card. EFC’s fixture list suggests ‘Winter is coming’ and Sean Dyche in no ‘King of the North’. On the plus side I made it to Lime Street for the 5.43pm train to London #EFC #Everton

Wow- a great deep soul B side that has just joined my collection. I don’t think they make them like this any more!

Very pleased to have picked this up at my local library. It tells of @ledbydonkeys.org in words and some brilliant pictures. Guerrilla agitprop at it’s very best- all power to them! Add it to your Xmas list perhaps? #ledbydonkeys

I am confident that ‘Caledonian Road’ will be adapted for TV screens very soon. Andrew O’Hagan’s confection of events involving unpleasant metropolitans and aristos is a readable excursion into a plausible fictional world centred on London N1, flavoured with contemporary references. #caledonianroad

I’ve booked a ticket for the Northern Soul at The Rivoli Ballroom on 13 Dec. I’m not 100% sure I will be able to get to it- but they sell out so fast and at least I have the option- I’d quite like to listen and dance to the set played by the legendary Kev Roberts. #northernsoul #rivoli

Currently reading this. Do I think it is any good? I’m 137/641 into it and still engaged with what seems to be a satire about contemporary metropolitan concerns and manners. Hit or miss verdict here when I complete it.
