The facts on the ground have changed, so the rules governing creative content have to change. Full stop. 7/7

we have GenAI, which has automated the process of taking “inspiration” from artists’ work. It’s taken away the labor that used to impose a barrier for entry. It’s made it so easy to produce knockoffs of an artist’s work woth zero effort that it’s rendered creative work effectively worthless. 6/7

Otherwise there’s no financial incentive to keep producing new art, and there’s nothing in the culture but endlessly regurgitated copies of what went before. The facts on the ground had changed, so new rules had to be invented to govern the new technology. 5/7

When the printing press came along it took the effort out of copying a written work, so it became necessary to create new rules to govern the new technology. Creators had to be able to impose an artificial scarcity so that their work still had value in the marketplace. 4/7

This is why artists don’t mind other artists taking inspiration, because it’s not as simple as taking an idea, you still have to put in the work to master the craft. Much like the scribes of old copying manuscripts by hand, the craft imposes a level of difficulty that creates a barrier to entry. 3/7

Because there was no need for it when books had to be copied by hand. The act of copying a book was a labor in its own right, much like how artists who take inspiration from others still have to master their craft. 2/7

These people are trained like good little seals, and he doesn’t even have to give them any fish. In fact the fish are going to cost more, and they’ll pay it.
