This gets to what I think is the heart of it. Console vendors could have been making branded PCs with the same standardised controller for thirty years now and had near-effortless backwards compatibility, but they just can't stop chasing controller gimmicks like random touchpads and haptic triggers.
think of the 3DS or other weird input systems! there is no way in hell we are ever going to see a device like the Wii U again. there is just no way to bring those experiences forward. but you can wheel out a .mp4 whenever!

This gets to what I think is the heart of it. Someone please edit the Souls Modding Wiki to change "D. Suki Village" to "D-suke's Village". It's a joke about the designer, Daisuke Satake, not wanting to commit to a name for the area, but the incorrect transliteration has hung around since the page was still on Wikidot.

1. Raytracing is only relevant for maniacs chasing hyperrealism. Reality: it's a different process for handling lighting which is much easier for developers than rebaking the lighting in the scene over and over again.

I wonder if people believing English is a language that mugs other languages for their vocabulary is a result of how many Anglophones are monolingual? Japanese is full of Chinese words. Welsh is full of Latin words. The Romance languages are constantly passing words around like notes in a classroom.

I see a lot of people arguing chess960 is just better than standard chess because "there's less theory", and that's not true. The absence of named openings doesn't mean there's less opening theory, it just means you get all the same kind of "except on Tuesdays" clauses you find in endgame theory.

I think it's weirder that the Frenzied Flame doesn't *have* a questline, none of the merchants say anything about the enormous mass grave of their people beneath the city of Leyndell, and their only named representative exists solely to tell you you can snap your fingers at a wolfman.

I'm guessing "certain Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Switch 2" means "like three launch games were made with a prototype development kit which is too old for backwards compatibility, the developers didn't update them after release and wouldn't respond to our emails".

Something I'm curious about: genre fiction has cottoned on that "ready, aim, fire" is wrong because "fire" originates from musketry (where you apply fire to the powder to ignite it) so instead we get "nock, draw, loose", but do we know how volleys of arrow fire were coordinated historically?

It's entirely possible for this to be useful without diminishing human releases. For example, anime subtitles often don't match the voice lines in the English dub because they were translated separately (on the assumption that people either watch with dubbed audio or with subtitles). 1/

Joking aside, I don't have much hope for this VLC thing to be anything that good, especially for high-context languages, but seeing the continued push bums me out. I fear people will stop caring for human releases despite the quality dip.

As another cis person: Singal doesn't represent me or "normal people" no matter what he wants to claim. Get rid of him and anyone else who shows up just to hurl abuse at trans people. Blocking is secondary to establishing a welcoming atmosphere sitewide.

I don't really agree with the "oh no now the noble sport of guessing about shit that doesn't make sense in Pokemon is Tainted" stance. What sucks is Nintendo and Gamefreak are so secretive that the only way we *can* learn any of this shit is when someone steals it from them.
These huge leaks are actually kind of a nightmare because now that door can never be closed and the discussions of what we know about the development of Pokemon games will always be filled in by stolen information taken at the expense of the people who made the games.
