Childhood lessons from my mother, a public educator, that continue to guide me today: “always consider the source” and “you are the company you keep”.

A Canadian who lives in Alberta on Treaty Land.
Thank you for your service and sacrifice for our country Bonnie.

Privatization? Profits before people? I remember when WestJet started in Calgary. Employee owned, vested interest in company. Everyone went above and beyond. Remember the Christmas ads when they got people to give their wish list, staff madly shopped, and gifts greeted people at their destinations?

I am begging that when Smith and LaGrange get in front of microphones to respond, they are pushed hard on their accountability and follow up questions are unabashedly frank. No letting them have the last word laying blame on AHS or Ottawa. No letting them speak like experts. Call them out on this!
November 11, 2025 at 3:04 AM
Layer in ongoing death blows to AHS which has created stress, chaos and uncertainty for employees. The Premier didn’t respond to strike concerns (16,000 AUPE LPNs and HC Aides). HSAA is still negotiating. The Premier just rambled on as she steers the HC system full steam towards the iceberg.

The parallels in Alberta to the US are disturbing and terrifying. I am done with these people getting the last word like Smith does on her radio show or pressers. Time to speak frankly and push back hard on these “randos” in Alberta like this guy did in the US 👇🏻

Reporter: Dr Oz said that—

Jeffries: Who? Nobody who is serious in this country takes Dr. Oz seriously… I’m not going to respond to any comments from randos like Dr. Oz who is woefully unqualified.

💯 We can’t waste vaccines that actually work, but don’t look over here as we waste millions on useless Turkish “Tylenol” that risked neonates. Did you hear Canada lost its measles elimination status? What will she say given Alberta is leading in cases and she crippled the public health response?

Oh but she does “fact check” and engage with experts such as seeing a tweet from a journalist (immigration), scrolling through comments on mom’s Facebook group (Tylenol), hearing from a dear friend (EMS crisis). We can believe everything that goes in one ear and out her mouth without delay!

I cannot think of one thing the UCP gov’t has done to improve patient care, even though they lead with that reason every time they talk about “refocusing and restructuring” AHS. I wonder and worry about long-term health outcomes without access to timely health care. Young to old, no one is safe.

This is making me question everything I assumed I knew about bears. “Safe in kayak” is no longer a thing in my brain. Anyone heard from Gary lately?

This is so powerful Tod. Not only are you and Jocelyn attracting much needed healthcare workers to your area. You are creating a safe haven for US citizens. There are many ways to stand up to fascism. In your kind, gentle and clever way, this will be your legacy.

What happened in 2012 onward for the big trend up in Calgary and Edmonton compared to other zones?
November 7, 2025 at 3:20 AM
I also want to acknowledge the heartbreak of the story you shared. We cannot forget these are human beings losing their independence, their relationships and life as they know it 💔
November 7, 2025 at 2:54 AM
Not much of a choice is it? Good point on the private costs. So if one person is placed by AHS and another chooses to go/pay privately, it could be $11,000+/month for a couple. Staying home, if that’s an option, also has challenges and costs. Staying home takes a small village and money to manage.
November 7, 2025 at 2:50 AM
I offer this distinction because the solution is more than long-term care spaces. There is a need for all types of spaces to “meet people where they are at”, provide the right kind of care in the right place. Or how about more support for unpaid caregivers or money for multigenerational spaces?
November 7, 2025 at 2:43 AM
To add to the complexity, there are different types of continuing care spaces:

Type A (aka LTC): most complex needs

Type B: more complex needs

Type B - Secure Spaces: specialized dementia care in a secure environment

Type C (hospice) palliative care

They may also have unscheduled needs that cannot be met through home care (a scheduled service) such as toileting needs or ongoing falls. It comes down to if someone can safely live at home? Do they have a support system to care for them? Do they have the financial means to remain at home safely?
